What is a good inexpencive and light hunting rifle in .243? I sold my Ultralight Weatherby a while back, and My Tactical heavy barreled rifles are too heavy to carry all day long. And it has to be in .243, cuz I got a lot of brass and bullets for reloading. 20" light or fluted barrels prefered. Thanks.

I have a couple of real friends and lots of internet friends who swear by their .243 Handi Rifles. (http://www.hr1871.com/Firearms/Rifles/handiRifle.aspx) Can get a complete rifle for 2-300 bucks. It's no benchrest tack-driver, but you can reliably take deer out past 200 yards, and the superlight with a scope is under 6 pounds.

The barrels heat up fast, but most folks report quite accurate cold-barrel shots, and if you're pulling the trigger too many times on a hunt, you're probably doing something wrong.

Tikka T3 looks nice and price is reasonable. Handi rifle is not my cup of tea. Although I believe in one shot one kill theory, I prefer a few extra rounds in a magazine just in case... How about Savage Sierra 10FM for $420 brand new. Any body have experience with one? Thanks.

I bought a Ruger model 77 with a Leupold scope used for 450.00. Call around to gun stores and see if they have any used first. You would be surprised at how many choices there are on complete rifles.

Another vote for the Tikka T3 lite. I have one in 223 for varmint hunting and I can carry that rifle all day long.

Anything Savage. Itll shoot right with the Tikka for less the price.
I use the Model 16 in 22-250, replaced my T3 light and my Model 10FP in 308 replaced my T3 varmint.

Have you considered a Rem Mod 7 - I have 2 - one in 243 and one in 308 - great carrying rifles and accurate too.

Tikka's are mag fed too if that counts. Extra mags are pricey though. Fit and finish on the T3 is much nicer than Savage or Remmys. The barrel actually free floats instead of touching at places like on the others. Bolt is nice and smooth with a short throw. Trigger is nice and crisp. I just bought a Rem 700 SPS and it's a POS compared to the Tikka out of the box. Gritty bolt, longer throw, crappier trigger, poor finish, and the stock doesn't have enough clearance molded in to keep from touching the barrel. Granted, it was a hundred dollars less than the Tikka. The same goes for a brand new 10fp that my neighbor just got. If you are looking for a rifle that doesn't need monkeying around with, seriously look at the T3. I almost forgot, the stock on the T3 is polypropylene instead of nylon like other makes. Polypropylene is lighter.

+1 on the Savage. I swapped out the wood stock for a lighter synthetic and the gun is quite light and well balanced.
