View Full Version : Is this an "arsenal"?

From today's Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324000704578388381498019740.html):

Arsenal Found in Newtown Gunman's Home

Newly released records from the investigation into the shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School describe an arsenal of weapons, including hundreds of rounds of ammunition, seized from the suspected gunman's home in the aftermath of the deadly attack.

Police seized two rifles, several knives and three samurai swords, according to search warrants and affidavits released Thursday morning. Also taken from the home in Newtown, Conn., which shooting suspect Adam Lanza shared with his mother, were three videogame consoles, hard drives and other computer parts.
...

Interestingly, the newspaper editors have now changed the text of the article from "hundreds of rounds" to "1600 rounds". (I think they first wanted to say "thousands", but 1600 is not actually "thousands", plural.) Two rifles and three swords is not much of an "arsenal", it least according to the dictionary definition of an "arsenal" being a military munitions depot.

The Wall Street Journal is owned by Rupert Murdoch. A conservative in most areas, he actually favors the Australian approach to gun control - a complete ban on all semi-auto firearms.

To someone who doesn't own any firearm, two guns or more and a few boxes of ammo look like an arsenal.

When a guy is minding his own business, his group of guns is a "collection". However, when his collection is described in a search warrant, it will be called an "arsenal", and he will be accused of "stockpiling".

So I guess that means if you have a collection of firearms and all the supporting gear and ammo you must have an arsenal, or even an armory if it's kept in a safe. Using that rationalle, if someone has a collection of paintings, then they must have a museum.

It's so revealing how those with biases will manipulate descriptive words to support their agenda. How 'bout just the facts, as in fact based reporting? That would probably be a very difficult task for the current MSM to accomplish given how involved they have become in trying to influence outcomes in today's environment.

As far as the media is concerned two or more firearms, and two or more bullets, would be defined as an arsenal.

my definition of an arsenal is many guns limited differences

a collection is many guns many differences

like say pez dispensers and arsenal of pez would be rows upon rows of the jack-o-lantern and ghost

a collection would be all the batmans ,the star warses ,the presidents ,the disneys

About a decade ago I was watching the nightly news and they said police had raided the house of a drug dealing married couple and found an arsenal of assault weapons and thousands of rounds of ammo.

They showed the arsenal of assault weapons and it was a Marlin Model 60 .22 and an old beat up lever action .22 that I couldn't identify. And the thousands of rounds of ammo was 3 bricks of .22 LR.

It turns out they broke into an innocent couples home based on a CI lying. No apologies to the couple for the arrest. They also refused to pay the $30,000 (or $20,000? I can't remember) worth of damage to the couples house.

A whole box?

Cha... how about a 6 round limit there hoarder! :)

Actually, since we're limited to a 10 round magazine, anything over that is technically stockpiling, right?

I really can't stand most of the mainstream media anymore. Sorry, I meant the propaganda division of the gov.

Sandy hook massacre, incidental proposed restrictions/legislation regarding ammo and firearms, and media bias with regards to 2A, not much, I suppose. But good luck with the rest of your mod trainee tenure.

I would be curious how many rounds would be "acceptable" to have by the media and anti-gunners alike. 20? 50? I bet that the answer is probably "under 100".

People have thier own way of looking at things.

I know a collector who owns more than 200 firearms. IT IS NOT AN ARSENAL. Its a collection .

One of my partners at work loves Glocks . (We are issued Glocks.)

Last time we talked , He had at least a dozen Glocks. Different models, calibers, some stock and some tricked out.

It is also not an arsenal.

Someone with 20 of THE SAME MODEL S&W M&P 15's ,300 magazines and 10000 rounds of ammunition HAS AN ARSENAL.

Yeah; and they do love that 'thousands of rounds' line... I mean really; who doesn't have thousands. You see a sale and you stock up.... its extra easy to get there if you use more than one caliber.... or with all the anti's on the march you want to stock up before it gets harder to buy mail order...

I've mocked reporters for it. Like; when has a shooter gone out with a bag with the 'thousands of rounds' to reload his magazines in the middle of a crime? Thats a lot lead to lug around.

Yeah the articles this morning were all talking about his huge stockpile of weapons and shocking amount of firearms, nobody printed the real list though. Had to look for the actual search warrant. A friggin enfield and a .22 and a saiga 12. Petty much clarified the pistols he had with him at the school, a 10mm glock and a .45 of some kind, based on the ammo he had. I don't think they ever told us what pistols he had.

If an "arsenal" of 3 guns and 1600 rounds constitutes "school shooter" status, frankly I'm surprised that I haven't spontaneously started a coup already.

Both the Oxford and The Merriam-Webster dictionaris define arsenal as "a collection of weapons". So according to the English language your collection is an arsenal by defination

Actually, to make it a "common sense" revolver you have to fill the cylinder with concrete. And what the heck do you need ammo for? You could hurt someone with that. Geez man, what are you thinking?

A collection of different firearms is NOT an arsenal in my opinion.

30 Remingotn 870 riot shotguns and cases with buckshot and slugs is NOT gun collection .

30 Remington 870 shotguns made at at different times (from first years till current) , that represent the development of that weapon is a collection.

A retired police captain that I knew, had over 50 Walther PP/PPK/PPKs style pistols. He had holsters, books etc. Everything on Walther PP series.

What He had was clearly not an arsenal but a collection.

Newtown Killer Lived With Cache of Guns

Authorities discovered a cache of weapons and more than 1,600 rounds of ammunition when they went to the home of Adam Lanza after he shot and killed 26 people—including 20 students—at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school in December, according to records released Thursday.

Anything to demonize the gun and not the monster committing the crime.

The news reports garbage like this because it shocks and scares people who don't own firearms or those that are not gun nuts. Scaring people makes them interested which leads to ratings which equates to money.

Fox news was reporting this story the same exact way.
