Ok....so I did a search on this already. Read all of the threads, but nobody seems to have a solid yes or no on their legality.

So....I'll ask. Are smoke grenades legal to own/possess in California? And does anyone know where I can find the PC related to them being legal or illegal?

TIA for any info you might have. Bill W- care to chime in on this one?

I got ask, why do you want them, as to me it would be a bad idea to light one off.
As a kid, 30+ years ago, I saw a real smoke device fire off near Santa Cruz high - a very very large cloud. No response from Fire as I recall.

My thought is even if the law does not specifically say you can't have, I figure a person would be in a sling now days for lighting one off due to Fire and PD that would respond because of the smoke, not to mention the fear of terror etc.

I think you can get the smoke flares. I know the fishermen around here have to replace theirs when they expire. You see a lot of orange smoke here around the fourth of July. Parachute flares too.

No idea these days, and this is not something I follow/track much.

I recall seeing, in the mid-80s, gunshops having smokers w/pull rings - they were green cans a tad bigger of a can of V8 juice. I haven't seen them since (i.e, in the 1990s).

No particular reason. Even if I did own them, I wouldn't be stupid enough to go and pop one off for the hell of it. This is more of a "I told ya so." One friend says they're illegal. I say they aren't.

No way man, I hear those ice cream truck drivers are 5150 and they might 417 'ya. :D

BW- thanks for chiming in.

these technically can fall under the category of fireworks. aren't all fireworks banned in CA?

No just the cool ones, anything that flies or blows up and metal sparklers. We can still have the stupid little smoke balls, and those dumb little snake things.

Go to your local West Marine, daylight orange smoke flares, Coast Guard approved, if you want the 25mm offshore kind, spend the bucks, but why? These don't go bang but do put out a mess of smoke.

They are not really grenades but signaling devices. Therefore I would tend to say that they are legal, as long as they are used as emergency signalling devices. The second you strap one to your car and pretend you are James Bond you will get in trouble.:D

Those are exactly what I'm talking about.

some of the guys I've airsoft with have brought them to games and used them regularly, they buy them from various online vendors who ship to CA without any problems.
