So I'm considering building up an AK and I want to make sure I understand this correctly...

I'm probably going to do a featureless romanian build so I can use the full capacity mags I bought years ago.
I found the following posted somewhere online:

The 16 countable parts of an AK rifle. No more than 10 of these parts may be imported.

(1) Receiver*
(2) Barrel
(3) Trunnion
(4) Muzzle attachments(flash hiders, brakes, barrel extensions, barrel nuts)*
(5) Bolt
(6) Bolt carrier
(7) Gas piston*
(8) Trigger*
(9) Hammer*
(10) Disconnecter*
(11) Buttstock*
(12) Pistol grip*
(13) Forearm handguards*
(14) Magazine body
(15) Follower
(16) Floorplate

* Denotes the most commonly available U.S. manufactured parts.

I'm planning to use the following US made parts:

(1) Receiver*
(4) Muzzle attachments (brake)*
(8) Trigger*
(9) Hammer*
(10) Disconnecter*

The rest of these parts will be imported parts:

(2) Barrel
(3) Trunnion
(5) Bolt
(6) Bolt carrier
(7) Gas piston*
(11) Buttstock*
(13) Forearm handguards*
(14) Magazine body
(15) Follower
(16) Floorplate

As I won't be running a pistol grip at all, that gets be down to only 10 listed imported parts.

Am I good to go as far as both 922(r) and CA AW regs?

Yes, since you won't have a pistol grip.

Randall,
If you find that you want to swap out the gas piston for a US one for some reason, I have one that I'm not using that I'd make you a deal on.

Besides, you're the only one I know personally that has the tools and the skill to do the swap!

You're planning on building yours exactly the way I recommend folks do it. I've got a javascript 922(r) checklist here, btw... http://thegunwiki.com/Gunwiki/BuildAkVerifyCompliance
