View Full Version : Researching Laws and History of Gun Control

I have the luxury this semester to write my final paper for my Research and Writing class on anything I please.

After being fortunate enough to go to the West Hollywood debate, Professor Adam Winkler left me with a new realm of gun control to investigate: The racism that was behind the motives for gun control in the United States. This is what I'm going to do my final research project on.

Now here is where I would appreciate the knowledgable information that Calguns has provided me in the past.

I was wondering If any of you can give me some legal cases or historical events that would be key moments or actions that would guide me in the right direction. State or Federal references both work. I can do the research myself, but if I have certain info to get me started, I can go from there.

I have to form a thesis and proposal by Monday April 1st.

Mods if this is in the wrong forum, please move it.

Thanks in advance.

10-4. I know quite a bit about that aspect, but I was maybe looking for specific laws or legal cases that pertained to it. I was looking for history that maybe predates the Civil War or history that is pre 20th century Californian.

Pick up a copy of "Gunfight: The Battle over the Right to Bear Arms in America" by Adam Winkler. Good read with lots of historical references with citations. Most libraries also have it too.

Read Justice Thomas' concurrence in McDonald. http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/09pdf/08-1521.pdf He starts talking about the racist elements of gun control around page 40 in the linked document. He discusses ante-bellum control and reasons for the control and he discusses gun control following the Civil War and the reasons for it.

Look up Clayton Cramer's "The Racist Roots of Gun Control" essay.

Thank you. I've been posting from my phone because I've been at work all day. I'll check the pdf's when I get to my desk top. Thanks again.
