View Full Version : Mag Extensions - Quality Differences?

So I'm looking to pickup a +2 mag extension for the Remington 870 Express I just picked up I noticed that the factory extension kit is much more expensive then say a Tac Star or other non Remington brand. Is there an appreciable difference in quality which would warrant me paying 2x as much for the Factory OEM part, or is it all marketing? I'm somewhat new to shotguns so any advice would be appreciated.

The wilson ones are nice, the remington one does come with a mag clamp. Tacstar is plastic, I think. Don't forget that expresses that came without the factory extension will need the dimples in the end of the mag tube pressed or drilled out for thelonger spring.

You used to be able to find a lot of 870 stuff on ebay, not sure where all the gun parts are now, but that item should be an easy find. I have a parkerized 3 shot remington that I gladly paid $55 for still in the box (not 4 sale yet).

I use the remington factory extension but the wilson and scattergun extension I would say are of equal quality. The scattergun extension has the advantage of no clamp with a sling mount.

sent you a pm for the right price I might be interested, I'm guessing it has the clamp and doesn't have the sling mount though :-/

I'm looking for one of these too. Which ones DO have sling mounts? And if I get one that doesn't have a sling mount and want to buy a clamp w/ sling mount separate, do all clamps fit on all tubes+barrels?

the scatterguns/wilson combat ones have sling mounts, some factory ones do also. The clamp is only for factory ones generally as the wilsons combat/scatter guns are made of metal and don't require the extra support.

I prefer the factory magazine extensions the most. Both of my Wingmasters use the factory extensions, and have been flawless so far. I particularly liked the factory versions because of the magazine clamps, making them feel very sturdy.

There is a slot on the magazine clamp that can accept a sling stud.

What I am talking about is a side sling swivel (if that is the word), for a "tactical" sling.

Yea the mag does have the newer clamp with the sling stud on the bottom.

I prefer factory or Wilson. Bought a Choate and wasn't impressed at all. GG&G also makes a side mount. These come with the specter gear 3 point slings.

This also works with their 3 point sling.

+1 on the spectre nylon reinforced elastic buttstock shotshell holder. Way less cumbersome than a reciever shellholder. CA fish and game code references the legality of the buttstock shell holder so a good one is a must in this state.

The TacStar that I had was metal, not Plastic. I believe that a previous poster was thinking of ATI.

My 870s and 1100 wear factory extensions only. I had a Choate, but it really was poor quality in comparison to the Factory. The clamp is a lot flimsier and the screw threads were stripped in no time at all. The sling stud attachment was rendered useless because of this. Also, when using a "Pull-Pull" shooting technique to rip off those shots faster, the Choate would fail to feed the first couple properly. It worked fine using a "Push-Pull" technique, but really, a Pump doesn't have to be that slow...

I don't have any experience with the Wilson, but not having a clamp isn't a good thing. One solid bump on the extension and your magazine tube can get bent.

I ordered an extension from Dave Metal Works today http://www.davesmetalworks.com/rem.html

Seemed like the Remington ones are hard to get, and I heard good things about the DMW ones.

Also a SOP sling from specter gear
http://www.spectergear.com/sop_sling.htm

which comes with a "front side sling mount plate", which I assume means a clamp with a sling swivel on it?

Hopefully this will do the trick.

This topic is right up my alley. I just picked up a Remington 870 express magnum, And was supposed to be a 7 shot in the mag tube But once i took the mag clamp off the mag tube only holds 6 and has crimps around it.
Are these the newer models, And as for the dimples How can i tell if they have them? Cause Now I am going to have to spend $70+ on a tube just for it to hold the 7 shot like i was sold on.

Thanx

P.S.

Has anyone had any experience with the mesa tactical stock kits?

I'm imagining that you got the 870HD model, which is labeled as a 7 shot. It's really 7 total, or 6 in the tube, and 1 in the chamber. It is not 7 in the tube.

The crimps are just a natural design of the magazine tube extension. They don't restrict the shells in the tube.

The dimples are at the end of the regular part of the magazine tube. They hold the magazine spring retainer, maxing out the mag capacity at 4 rounds. If your tube holds 6, then you don't have the dimples.

Thanx for the info. can i get a extension tube from remington that will actually hold 7 in the tube other that 6 with an 18" barrel and what do they cost roughly? Or a Good aftermarket one will work (preferably Factory)

Thanx again.

Well, direct from Remington, I think you have to be Law Enforcement but Brownell's sells them. You can also find one used on the forums. I'd be looking to pay in the ballpark of maybe $60, because they aren't as popular as the +2 extensions.

A +3 will be sticking out a couple of inches under the 18" barrel. I've seen it done and others say that it's okay. IIRC, you'll get a lot of debris on it, so it'll have to be wiped down often.
