View Full Version : Yugo SKS stock refinishing

Hey guys, I've got a Yugo M59 that I recently cleaned all the cosmoline from. The stock is in great shape, but I'd love to refinish it since it's a little rough.

I am looking to stain it a nice dark color.

What do I need to get this done. Never refinished wood before in my life. If there is a how to thread that you know of I'd love the link.

Or if anyone has info on what products to buy that would be awesome.

there is a great thread pn stock refinishing here (although it deals with AKs, but a stock is a stock):

I recently redid my Chinese using 0000 steel wool, 320 grit sandpaper, mineral spirits and Tru-Oil. I used dark walnut stain on mine and it turned out great.

This one hasn't even fallen off the first page.

Did you search before asking?

Leave the stock alone!!! You already cleaned it. Just enjoy it for it's history!!

Belt sander, 80 grit. And make sure you sand through any markings on the stock. I'd skip the oil finish and just use high-gloss paint, red is best.

Anything you do will decrease the value of your M59. But it is your gun. The M59 IMO are the most accurate SKS's.

I am definitely not worried about the value of it. I'll give this one to family when I'm an old man! I would just like to smooth this baby out a little and give it a face lift. I couldn't respect the history of it more, hence the reason I got a cosmoline layered beauty, I wanted to get to know her before I jumped in bed with her.

Thanks for the info and the thread guys!
