Tactical / Precision Rifle Match
October 27, 2007

A Place to Shoot in Saugus, CA will be having a Tactical / Precision Rifle Match on Saturday, October 27, 2007. Registration will begin at 0700 and the first stage will begin at 0730. The match should run until approximately 1200.

The match will consist of approximately five or six different courses of fire (depending on time and number of participants) and will be a combination of precision shooting and tactical application. Ranges will vary between 100 and 900 yards. There will be a combination of reactive targets, paper and steel that range is size from 1 MOA to 3 MOA for the given range depending on the course of fire.

This match is primarily designed for the Precision Bolt Action Rifle, however, if you own a hunting rifle or semi-auto with good optics and feel capable of its performance and accuracy, feel free to participate.

There is some movement during the stages, and targets will be engaged from various field positions in whatever shooting position is necessary to insure a clear shot and in some cases concealment while taking the shot.

The fee for the match will be $25.00 for early registration, $30.00 for match day walk-ons. Plaques and certificates will for awarded to the top three finishers and a medal will be awarded to the top shooter in the 100 - yard dot drill. This is limited to 20 competitors so pre-registration is suggested. If you’re interested in registering or have any questions either PM me through this forum or email me directly at billerwin@msn.com.

Might be skipping this one.. will either be catching the last of the season in D9.. or hunting D11. But who knows... maybe i'll tag out before the match!

Doesn't deer season close the weekend before the match? It opened on the 22nd of last month and extends for 30 days. Does that make the 21st closing day?

Yup.. you're right. D9 is over on October 21st. I'll still be catching that.. but I have a 2nd deer tag for D11 which doesn't end till November and I'll be hitting that up unless I tag it out this coming weekend!

I'll definitely try to make the match though since there's always something new to learn and experience!

Here's 2 links of me over at D9 this past weekend.. didn't get nothing but it was beautiful especially since it snowed. Got lost for a bit too.. but we won't talk about that :o

Sat here for awhile waiting for something to walk through since there were a lot of tracks and I saw a buck run in this direction .5 miles away. About a 600 yd shot to the far side:

And a pic I took of myself "survivorman" style since i was roaming around by myself:

I'd love to go, but unfortunately I don't know enough about my 123g Black Hills factory ammo or a dope card for that load. I am really anxious to get started into some precision long range shooting, but I gotta take baby steps before I can run with the big dogs :)

I'm working on Sunday and can bring my chrono if you want to come out and shoot a few over it to get your velocity for a dope card.

The best way to learn to swim is to jump in the deep end.

I'll have to see if I can take you up on that offer! The sooner I can get my load data figured out, the sooner I can get my dope card put together and actually start applying it to some long range shooting.

Are the fires anywhere near the range? Think they will alter plans for the match?

As of tonight when I left the Aqua Dulce fire was not near the range. As of now all is as planned.

My mother-in-law is in Ramona in SD. They are being evacuated. That got me thinking if the agua dulce was threatening the range.

Timberwolf

We saw the smoke and they closed San Fransquito at the bottom near Copper Hill but its not threatening the range.

Thee fire is around 1/4 mile from phils house and mine. We got a little worried tonight if it cross seirra hwy we are screwed. We have No idea how this thing is gona go. It might head toward the range or away. Im thinking it heads toward the range with AM heat and super heavy winds coming.

News reports this morning indicate that they have evacuated San Francisquito to south and Green Valley to the north - I will keep all posted.

yep, i'm okay. tons of ashes around my house from the nearby Castaic fire. i'm glad i left early from the range yesterday. i would have got stuck, and not be able to go home. ended up reloading 225 rounds last night, and ready to go to the match!

225 rounds? That Lyman scale/dispenser sure seems like it helps speed things up. I fianlly broke down and bought a chargemaster. Natchez had it for $250 so I couldn't resist. Haven't had a chance to load with it yet, but tried it out a little. With Varget, was getting +/-.05 grain repeatedly. Looks like I'm going to have fun.

My best time has been 30 rounds in 20 minutes from priming to seating.

10-22-2007, 9:36 AM
BTW, how many rounds do I need for the match?

PistolPete75
10-22-2007, 9:37 AM
i reload in two stages. 1 night full brass prep, and 2nd night powder charge and bullet seating. $250 for a chargemaster is a real nice price. can't beat that.

PistolPete75
10-22-2007, 9:37 AM
bill will say 50, but it's more like 35 rounds if that.

Should be getting my muzzle brake installed tomorrow.. but I haven't shot my .308 in like 4 weeks! If I can work in some range time before then to at least zero my rifle.. I'll let muscle memory take over and try to make it. I still say new muzzle brake + new scope + no practice is going to be tricky.. but i'm up for a challenge! Dang.. need to get reloading.. haven't reloaded in a month.

AR15Barrels. He took care of my AR15 upper (assembled and perm attached a muzzle brake).. and has done some work on Nayt's barrels too I believe. Aside from the good work, he charges a fair rate and is located in LA. Why? Going to get something done?

Geez you people reload fast. It probably takes me 3 hrs per 50 rounds after tumbling! And that's if i'm being quick about it!

Randall has done 3 rifles for me. 2 Savages and a 700. I was planning on him cutting my M14 but it shoots so well I can't do it anymore.

**UPDATE**

I've had a lot of questions regarding the impact the Buckwheat Fire had on the range and this match.

I spoke with Tommy this morning, he was at the range, and all is GO! The fire got as close as the ridge across the road but no damage from the fire. We have a few things blown around but thats it. The road is open in both directions so no access problems.

I'll be working tomorrow getting ready for the match and doing some clean up so if y'all want to come out and check your zeros etc come on. Otherwise I'll see y'all on Saturday.

Why is everyone taking time off work to load ammo - I bet I have one of the lowest round count matches around - hell if your hit your target with the first shot you could probably get by with less than 20 - 25 rounds. :p

But since y'all are loading up maybe I'll stick in a couple of barrel burners just for good measure LOL

Y'all need to quit having these on 2nd, 3rd and 4th saturdays when I'm shooting my normal matches.

20 to 35 rounds of precision shooting sounds fun, but 250 rounds of 3gun is more appealing.
5 or 6 courses of fire.
Anything from touching the muzzle to 350yds.
handgun/shotgun/rifle on the move, sometimes all in the same course of fire.

What's not to like?

"I'm shooting my normal matches."

You should make this one of your "normal matches". Come find the challenge of smacking the steel at 865 yards with your first shot.

Between the last 2 matches, only 1 person conquered that challenge.. and that was luck!

Pete, Nate and I smacked the crap out of the buff last weekend from our little clearing. It can be done - just gotta get the dope. We'll see how all do this weekend.

By the way a little birdie might suggest y'all dust off your slings and/or rucks because at least one stage might be "old school".

Timberwolf - Thanks again for accommodating and letting me zero my rifle after I assembled the thing only the night before!
