They've had the "Mile matches" in North Carolina since at least the early 1980's and probably before.

Personally, I think that it is GREAT that these guys can hit something the size of the proverbial barn door at a mile. Granted, they're not using your typical rifles to do it and those things probably kick like a mule but....

Hmm, the actual target looks to be a 42" diam. or so......a far cry from a 8 foot barn door. Also, I believe the 1000 yrd regulation target is 24", so this is pretty good when you stop to realize it is done with iron peep sights!

Try seeing anything smaller at a mile.... without glass.

Edit to add:

A little ballistic calculations shows that the bullet drop is over 4080" or 340 feet!

If I'm not mistaken, that's almost 10sec air time (5 going up and 5 coming down)

First I was being a little "ideal" in assuming a BC of 1 for that number. Using a BC of .5 at 1300fps and 700 gr gives a drop of 5670" or 473 feet. Final velocity is 700 fps with a total flight time of 6.3 seconds.

Also a bullet doesn't go up and then down, it is all down :p ....at least from the line of the bore.

That's amazing; the one picture of them looking at the completed target in the distance just had my jaw on the floor. Damn that's a long way off.
