View Full Version : October suggestions for meet & greet

Its October, the air is cooler and I have the need to engage distant targets, feel the push of recoil and hear the rewarding sound of steel being struck by supersonic projectiles.

We have a new thread, a name and some data books on order so when we gettin together again and where???

Personally.. I'll probably be hunting every weekend in October and November. I'd make an exception for a desert shoot that goes out to 1000 yds though.

yep, 800-1,000yardage seems to be the winner right now. let's go to the desert!

Yeah I have the perfect target for 800 - 1000 . . . it comes complete with its own "no hit 'em" force field. :p

I really want to stretch the new guns legs a bit. 1000 yard desert shoot sounds fun.

let's do a desert shoot in november. 600-1000yards. this will get everyone out to come. weather shouldn't be too bad in november as long we get out of the rain.

Timberwolf

Let's do something . . . I'm getting real bored at APS as is Savannah - in fact she was compaining on Sunday that I never take her anywhere exciting . . .

PistolPete75
10-17-2007, 12:19 PM
how about the 10th or 17th of November? we can do a desert shoot from like 7:30ish to 12:00ish, have lunch, and then go home.

I'm free starting in November. I've eyeballed some sweet 1000+ yd shooting locations with roads/ paths for you to drive up to your target, but haven't actually shot at them yet.. i'll have to scout them out. I'm still voting for a desert shoot.

Timberwolf
10-17-2007, 12:24 PM
I'm cool with either of those days - got a spot in mind? Like out near Boron or something or have you got a spot up near Tehachapie?

PistolPete75
10-17-2007, 12:27 PM
Wildcard has the spot, i never shot in the desert before.

Wildcard has the spot, i never shot in the desert before.

I have a weekday spot where I use a spotter for safety because dirt bikers are there on the weekends and I wouldn't want one popping up. Weekends are a different story.. I've found quite a few awesome spots because there's a clear path you can take to the target AND a mountain as a backstop, but haven't properly scouted them. If I have light left when I return from my hunt this weekend, I'll GPS the spots and maybe quickly scout them. Heck.. we can go check them out. I wouldn't want to tell a group to show up somewhere I know nothing about.

There are a couple spots up here I frequent. Miles and miles of open desert and few bikers...off of Tehachapi-Willow Springs road.

I vote for this one on November10 :)

Hey Ryan, which Eberlestock pack do you have? I'm thinking about the Gunslinger cause it's lighter weight and seems to offer everything I need (for hunting and backpacking with a rifle). Besides.. it's sell for $190 and comes with a Streamlight flashlight right now! The other ones seem a little bulky and heavy for my intended use.

I have the gunslinger and its awesome. Used it humpin' all my stuff at that class. There was plenty of room for everything, it was just jumbled a bit. It only has the one big compartment and a few little ones. No big deal to me. Its super comfy and with the rifle portion folded under, makes for a great standard backpack.

ETA: I got mine from snipertools. They had the best price shipped, and I already had a scorpion. If you need a light, that seems like the best deal.

can we muster up a shoot before the holidays?

Timberwolf

I think I can help you out - October 27, A Place to Shoot, sign in at 0700 and smack the maiden at 0730. Shameless plug - couldn't resist.

Seriously I was kicking around the idea of a good old fashioned turkey shoot - modern style - say the 2nd weekend before Thanksgiving - 100 yard dot drill, 60 sec par time, indiviual times recorded, prone, 20.00 entry fee - winner take 50% of the pot, 2nd 30% and 3rd 20%. We can do it at APS etc etc - we'll shoot it out of the bays.

My buddy just gave me a good idea. Let do the turkey shoot but divide it up different. 50% goes to winner the rest to beer and bbq :)

I usually go to Kurt's match up in Vegas, and thats about 4 hours. Its only 4.5 or so to you guys. You usually have the train up the Saturday before a match, correct?

What we ought to do is get a road trip together for NorCal '08 which he'll probably be announcing soon - which brings up another point we (SCPRC shooters) ought to plan on attending SCPRC (SoCal Prec Rifle Comp) '08 in Riverside this coming year.

We have to get up there a couple times before the big match to learn some of the finer intricacies of that range and wind patterns. I can drive.

Several guys from the Hide went up before NoCal last year. From what I hear that place is like shooting on a golf course and they even have wind flags. But I'd be up for it . . .

I'm going to the Vegas match on Nov 3rd if anyone wants to hitch a ride.

Negative.

However the dates for my big match is August 30th and 31st. September 1st is a holiday which gives you boys an extra day to decompress and travel.

Registration should open up in probably March of 2008. 50 slots and for some reason I think they will fill up in less than a week this time around.

As for wind flags....nope. I tied them to the poles. The only reason we have flags up is for safety. It lets folks know there is live fire on the 1K range and not to drive down range.

You boys plan a road trip and I will change up the format a lil to make things more interesting during a monthly shoot.

That'll give me 1 weekend to dope out my rifle.. but sounds fun.. i'll make it happen if you're rolling up. I wouldn't be able to head up until the early evening on friday.. so just let me know the plan before I commit 100%.

You going to the APS match? Usually the vegas match is 400 yards and under. Kurt sets up some sweet movers, and does some multiple target/timed/barrel burner stages from 100-400 yards. Its a lot of fun, and cheap, like 16 bucks.

Occasionally goes to 500, I think. I've never been there for one of those. Last match involved a 10 in. plate mover, shooting seated from 1 and 200 yards. Then 300 and 400 prone. And lots of paper stages. It was about 65 rounds total.
