The Performance center railed revolver was originally designed for SWAT entry team members who carry the "body bunker" shields. When shooting a semi auto the slide frequently smacks the shield and causes a FTF so revolvers are still frequently carried by these team members. With the 8 round cylinder and rails for lights these are the "go-to" guns for many of them. Sweet gun for its intended purpose.

Props to the performance center toys!

Like the other poster, I kinda chuckled too when I saw S&W's new tactical revolver...

... then I thought about it a little more.

No doubt about it, that's one hell of a Performance Center S&W. I'm sure that it has a trigger better than 99.8% of all the other pictured guns in every thread on CalGuns.

I don't know if it will be adopted by the SWAT teams that it was intended for, but it seems to me that gun is a number one primo home defense cannon. It's got it all, as I see it, in order of importance:

1. Revolver reliability
2. .357 Magnum
3. S&W-made
4. Performance Center craftsmanship
5. 8-round capacity in moon clips
6. Streamlight illumination, even if it's not very easy to use effectively.
7. Top rail (I think I'd mountthe tiny Zeiss breadbox red-dot on it)

Questionable feature:

8. Hammer lock security, but I won't argue for or against it.

Titanium cylinder and barrel shroud.
Aluminim alloyed with Scandium for the frame.
The frame is anodized black to protect against oxidation.
The Titanium does not easily oxidize so it's left unfinished.

The main thing to know is that this gun is very lightweight for an 8 shot N-frame 357.
The lightweight cylinder helps you get a lighter doube action trigger.
I bought this to get into competetive revolver shooting.

38 short colt cases with 200gr bullets loaded to about 650fps will make minor power factor and barely recoil more than a 22. :)

Amen ..... Thats why I bought it. I also do not like the lock .... but what can you do as far as new revolvers .... buy a taurus .... no thanks. I have been searching the www for a while to find a case where a S&W lock engaged without the key .... and haven't really found a true proven case yet.

I've handled both the 327TRR8 and the quite-similar 327M&P. You don't need to have all those rails mounted, and the the gun has a fairly 'normal' profile.

Wonderful balance, wonderful trigger, 8 shots x 357.

Sorry, Randall, but to me it certainly looks far better than those 2-tone guns with different-colored cylinder (very 'pimp' appearance to me).

But I wish the hell they'd make a 627 wheelgun in regular production and not from the Perf. Center - hate that funky wedge-angled bbl. S&W's PC always has to mess up something even though the underlying performance/feel is there.

Just make me an 8-shot N-frame 627 in 357 with 5" full underlug bbl and I'll be happy. (Of course, it should have an unfluted cylinder. :) )

Yeah thats what I wanted too. I was going to just say forget it and get a 686 6" 7-shot but the N frame suits my hand better.

I test drove both 327s b4 buying and I felt with a scandium framed gun, It had a nicer balance with a steel cylinder rather than a titanium.

Steel cylinder gives a heavier double action trigger due to the extra weight you have to move while pulling the trigger.
That's why I went for the titanium cylindered version.
I could care less for the two-tone either, but I'm not going to the trouble of black-oxiding the cylinder and shroud just to make it match.

I own guns to shoot, not to worry about how they look.

I've always wanted to see a picture of one of these fired in a low light environment. I wonder if it will overexpose the image with all the powder burning outside the barrel? It would be cool to see.

And please make it steel. I'm not a huge fan of the lightweight materials. I really wish they'd bring back the 'bloodwork' 627 - aka the "ultimate defensive revolver". 8x .357, all steel, unfluted cylinder, and 2.5 in barrel. And eagle boot grips.

Awesome gun and they only made ~250. :/

Here is a pic of my 629 5 inch classic. I have shot the crap out of this thing so it does show some wear and tear but it still shoots great.

Me like. I saw your thread on SW forums (or was it THR?) where you picked it up almost NIB with the papers, box and everything. Congrats! :) I don't consider what you paid *that* bad for CA; a bit high but not insanely out of the ballpark.

That was me. It was a high price, but fixed sight L-frames are very rare in this state. Plus, I made up for it two weeks later by getting a NIB Model 27-2 for only $100 more! Here's a photo - it is still in the CA 10-day jail so I haven't shot proper pictures of it yet, but here is a taste:

Hiya Riv

Yes the 29 is nickel plated.

Yes it's the TRR8. It weighs as much as a K frame and that is why 38 recoil is negligible.

These are terrible pics, but the guns are interesting.

My dad was good friends with a gunsmith in Sacramento named Bill Davis. Bill was famous for his PPC revolvers, and built several for my dad.

The two guns here were hybrids created by Bill. Both are basically Colt barrels mated to Ruger frames. The quality on these is phenomenl, and at first glance, you almost don't know that these are a gunsmith's work.

The topmost gun is a Ruger Security-Six frame mated to a 4" Colt Python barrel. Davis called this a Cougar.

The bottom gun is a Ruger Speed-Six frame mated with a 3" Colt King Cobra barrel. He called it the Rattler.

Both have a fantastic feel, and trigger work that is simply indescribable.

Latest project, a custom 686 5" heavy barrel:

yeowza, now that's a barrel (you machine that?). had a chance to put some rounds through it, see how it works out?

And a photo of it with its kin..............

is that.... a 3" model 64? or maybe a PC model (looks like a port there on the front)? Whatever it is I like it. :)

Actually that barrel started out as a 6" long, 1" diameter rifled premium blank. The gunsmith that built it for me is Mark Kearns, who worked at Bill Davis years ago. Mark said they used to build their top grade PPC guns with this barrel. He cut it to 5", slabbed sided it, built the underlug, gave it a recessed crown and mounted a factory S&W front sight that he milled off of an old barrel. He did an awesome job on it, his workmanship is superb! Mark installed the barrel and crane lock, but didn't have time to do the action job. So, off to Craig Maraviov in Woodland for some end shake removal and a competition tune. The action SUPER smooth and light. Just picked it up today so I haven't had a chance to shoot it. Should be a super controllable tack driver!

The 3" is a 65 that started out as a 4" gun. Craig had the 3" barrel laying around from his days at Davis Company so I had him install it. He did this powerport before S&W came out with theirs (shoulda patented it!). He installed an S&W auto front sight, rounded the butt, smoothed and polished the trigger and gave it a fine bead blast. It's a very neat little gun. Here are some photos of the gun before the work, as well as the barrel porting:

Here is my little jewel to complement my Puma 92 SS .44Mag "Trapper" (coming in a few days!)

This Taurus Tracker .44 Magnum sports a Simply Rugged pancake holster, speed loader pouch and "most versatile" pouch. Not pictured is the Simply Rugged belt, another fine piece of firearm hardware. I can hardly wait to get my tomahawk blade cover and a holster for my Single Six (I will post pics of that later!)

S&W 686 Plus. Trigger job, lightend springs, machined for moon clips, J.M. grip, still want to change out both sights. Had the barrel milled to lighten it up.

What is it and why can't I ever find any good deals on this sort of thing?

It's an Armscor .38--made in the Philippines. Centerfire Systems sells them for $169.99 so I did get it pretty cheap (add shipping and $20 for FFL transfer--it's over $200 in your hands) But the difference is not huge.

http://www.centerfiresystems.com/AC-M200.aspx

I can only assume it wasn't selling and they didn't want to mess with it any more so they auctioned it with no or low reserve. I just wanted a cheap revolver, and this one filled the bill.

It's a sort-of Colt copy with simple lockwork and pretty mediocre all around. I have an Armscor 1911 copy that is much better quality.

I use the standard cheap $150 camera, $5 in fabric from the store and natural light coming in the window (and a cheap tripod I found at work). You can tell the camera is cheap from the quality, but other than that it works great! I'd rather spend my money on guns than cameras. :-P

So I finally got around to trying to take (and post-process) some images of my 'kids' to share. There are several really phenomenal photographers here (SJShooter and Lunde come to mind) and they have inspired me to spend a bit more time on this.

So one of the 'quirks' of my collection is that I have acquired, through no aim of my own, the original engineering revisions ("-nodash") of various models. Here's my 49-1, 649, and 36:

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee126/northslope/guns0001.jpg
http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee126/northslope/guns0010.jpg

I also have original 66 and 581; seen here with their factory stocks reversed. I'm not a huge fan of Factory Targets on a 4" K-Frame. It just doesn't look as elegant as the Magnas. Likewise, the 581 is too beefy with just Magnas -- but looks divine (and shoots more divinely in my hands..) with Targets.

Upgraded pic. Also included is a S&W Model 13 that Davis mated to a Model 581 (L-frame) barrel as a Christmas gift for my Dad. Don't think there was any special intent for the combination, but was just a "custom" gift. The trigger pull is unbelievable.

This is my S&W Model 19-4 with 4" barrel, target hammer and target trigger. I bought it in July 1980 because I wanted something that matched my AF supplied weapon and packed more punch. It's still sweet and accurate using either 38 special or 357 magnum.

Very nice!
I just picked up my 19-4 last week and have already enjoyed it at the range. Wonderful piece of hardware :)

Here are two of my four classic revolvers that are tricky to get in CA:

Here's my 686+ and what it can deliver. I shot this at Davis Street in San Leandro at the 12.5 yard range, using Miwall 158 JHP.

This group consists of 21 rounds.

New-to-me S&W 686-2 courtesy another Calgunner, fresh after a complete teardown and deep cleaning ready for her first match/maiden voyage. New extractor, a new pair of Craig Spegel square butt grips, slide rebound polished and lubed in all the right places. Butter, meet smooth.

I like the beadblast here, that's hot. :) If you scrub at a beadblast finish with a brass brush, does it ruin the new finish work at all?

I haven't tried--the strongest thing I use while cleaning a revolver is a nylon brush. I suspect a brass brush might slightly polish the finish.

Edit: I also had the same treatment done to a no-dash 2.5" 686:

Thanks guys!

I had the chance to take the nickel 19 out for it's first time yesterday, 2nd time for the blued 19. Both shot great, and the balance of the 4" k-frames felt quite nice.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the results. :)

Here are a few picks of my latest project. The top photo is the gun with a custom 5" barrel that Mark Kearns did for me. I could never get used to the feel of the gun with that barrel so after talking my bud Schlamoo out of a new Python barrel, off to Craig Maraviov it went for a Smolt conversion. He had already done a competition tune on it and it's super smooth. This may be the ultimate Smolt conversion as it balances super nice and has a perfect feel.

I picked the dash 10 up for $700 of a fellow calgunner, if you look around you can find them new for as low as $900 normally they go for $1100
