Just watched this PBS special on drones in use - made me realize a drone may have a place in retreat security. Anyone else thinking about having a $400 + drone for personal security?

It also means we need an anti drone defense strategy :)

The PBS special is the full show from the argus pod drone video currently in off topic.

The right to privacy is not guaranteed. The places I can take a whiz in my backyard have declined, in size and number, in the last few years.

Great Nova Show. Had to watch the whole thing.

I have a friend that flys helecopters. He has a camera on it. Cost him only $200.00. Pictures looked great.

Tell me that wouldn't freak out some dogs, especially my neighbors.

Pretty interesting $300 with 2 video cams (plus an ipad/android tablet) - limitation for security would be the 50 yard range depending on the size of your retreat. Also don't know if the cameras would support IR. Something like this with IR, thermal and extended range would make sense for additional security at a retreat site.

Screw it - add a weapons pod....

I rarely break Opsec but...

Dark blue/ matte black helium balloon on a black cable, 360 degree digital thermal/IR camera. You dont need detail...only early warning.

Can't find the article just now, but there was a competition held in VA, I believe, where the players tried to attack the control channels. IIRC, the wifi network the Parrots use is not encrypted, and comes with a default password; one team simply logged in and shut down the other drones!

Time Magazine has an article about drones this week. Their story is robots never really reached their full potential as long as they were earth-bound, but as soon as they took to the air they came into their own.

The balloon idea is probably far better for defense / security. The drone though would make a better point man. I'm waiting for someone to fly one where they shouldn't. Oops.
