What I can offer: BLM maps, trash containers (bags, 5 gal. buckets, cardboard boxes), tools (shovels, rake), water (5 gal. container) and a great work ethic. I do not have a offroad vehicle, but would be willing to drive and meet someone somewhere who had proper transportation. Of course I would contribute to fuel costs.

It is the same effort. If you can come out and clean, you will join the list. No requirement to stay and shoot or whatever. Purpose of this thread (correct me if I'm wrong, Musick) is to identify those willing to help. Shooting afterwards is the bonus.

I'll add my name to the list, contingent upon when and where.

You sir are correct.

So six or seven should be a good size for a cleanup.

How is February 9th or 16th look for everybody?

hoss_hk
01-24-2013, 6:12 PM
The idea behind this effort is to keep known areas known by those who want to keep them clean. Obviously we are dealing with a larger population that knows about them as well. The goal is to get a list of volunteers established, and the cleanups will be announced by PM or email once the event is organized. We will be working with BLM and local agencies. This is by no means a commitment for anyone, just a starting contact point to see where our resources are available. PM any specific questions to your local C3 rep.

I've keep meaning to get out to BLM land so I can really test my rifles. No truck but soon I might have my 2WD Santa Fe back which would probably be better off-road than my GTI... I've got a few buckets and a rake, maybe a shovel :P

Please DO NOT do any PRESS RELEASE. It's great to let the local BLM staff know that people are cleaning the place up, and it's great to make arrangements here on calguns, but we do NOT want the media publicizing either of the following:

A. That people can go out and shoot on public land (particularly specific spots, which the media would have no problem alerting the public too--which means more irresponsible shooters out there).

B. The state that these lands are already in (trash, trees all shot up, fires started, etc...).

We need to be good stewards of the land we use, which means cleaning it up, and NOT announcing to every a--hat out there where to take that new gun they bought "because they're gonna ban them" and be unsafe and a literbug, particularly given the political climate right now.

I am all up for taking out new shooters to our spots and teaching them the "rules" (clean up and be safe). It's a terrible idea, though, to let the press announce this to the public, because they will either twist it, or put out the info for the hordes without actually doing the education/teaching piece we all do when we take new shooters out.

I have Fridays off and know of a couple spots that could use cleaning. Mostly shot up plywood and pallets that won't fit in my car. I usually rake and fill up a trash bag or two when I'm out there. I have to remember to bring boxes or buckets for the broken glass.

There are other spots further East that could use a good cleaning.

I like to get in on this action. Weekends would be hard for me but I have a couple of days during the week that I could go out if anyone wants to try to put together something for a Tuesday's or a Thursday's. Other weekdays would be possible but would be a short day. I have a full-size 4-door 4x4 truck. So I could carry a few people. I could supply a couple trash cans, 5 gallon buckets, and many boxes. Also have a few shovels, rakes, and pairs of gloves. Trash bags at any store. I would certainly like to get together with some well like-minded people and do some good. I haven't been out to BLM lands but would like to shoot outdoors. So if anyone knows places that need attention and would like to set-up something during the week please PM me.

Subaru Forester (limited off road, can't carry much) & Ford Club Wagon (can haul a decent amount, but not off-road), basic cleanup stuff.

I'm in, I think it's a great idea.. it just stinks most locations will be out at county line. It would be cool to leave some sort of "reminder" of the responsible shooters that offered to clean the mess up.

Warm weather would be nice. ;)

Most weekends I can help with cleanup. Especially since this seems to be the only way find out where it is legal to shoot. I spent most of a week checking out areas that were supposed to be okay only to find out that each one of them was off limits to shooting for one reason or another. Seems like about 40% of San Diego county is BLM land but most of it is restricted for one reason or another.

Who says government in not the problem?

When I go offroading, I haul out as much as my truck can carry. When I go hiking, I leave the trail with a large garbage bag full every time. I also recycle everything that I can. I like to see nature without all the trash. I wish others would do the same. 8-)

Add me to the roll call!

I am recovering from C-spine fusion, so no heavy lifting for a while and unfortunately no shooting till about December.... :( I do enjoy getting out and helping out however I can!

I am in Mira Mesa, have a Nissan Titan 2wd with a soft shell, plenty of field tools and related gear, can haul bodies (and poss drag a couple extra along...)

As a thought for some of the areas that partially require 4x4, use the smaller capacity 4xs to ferry junk out to larger capacity 2x trucks (someone probably thought of this already, but I didnt see it posted so.... ;) )

I am also a homebrewer so can help out with hydration dispensing hardware during the cleanup and some "cheer" for an after event debrief if such a thing happens.... :cheers2:

How far out is this place?

When we met at Grossmont center, it was about thirty minutes. Parking was the limiting factor at the last one, but they don't get much larger than a dozen people. As far as being new is concerned, don't sweat it; most of the folks at the last cleanup were meeting for the first time and we had a blast!

I was out at one of the BLMs today. Ranger actually had BP pull us over after we left to escort us back to the shooting site. Apparently, policing your brass and trash is not enough anymore, since we were given trash bags a lecture by the Ranger on how biodegradable clays and shotgun wads need to be policed as well.

I admit, we did leave shot up clays, but we did police out brass and trash prior to initially leaving. In honestly, if someone had told us prior to, we would've policed the clays before we left. Unfair of the ranger to categorize my group as "bad shooters", in terms of littering, when there is nothing to let shooters know to police clays.

Ranger said they won't put up signs in the area, think it's a good idea to create a general rule and courtesy sticky on how to operate and leave BLM shooting areas?

Anyways, we picked up our clays plus tons of wads and trash today including a 35lbs Olympic weight

I'll make it simple for you. If you pack it in, pack it out!

Those wads and busted up clays can make an area look like hell real fast, and are a huge PITA to clean up. More than a dozen of us spent the better part of a day out there cleaning up just that. Do you really need a sign, to let you know you need to clean up your mess?

I went to six sites today. Every one of them had .22lr cases everywhere. Many of them had some trash that was obviously very recent. Some of them were just covered with brass and shotgun shells.

In three hours, I picked up over 1,000 pieces of reusable brass and about 50lbs of garbage. I picked up more than a complete box of shotgun clays that were unbroken as well as 2 trash bags full of pieces.

The last site I went to had more garbage than I was prepared to deal with today as well as more .22lr cases than I have ever seen in one place.

On another note, as a general rule, DO NOT PARK your vehicle in dead, dry grass. Today, I explained about catalytic converters, heat and fires to a guy. When he moved his truck, the grass that he had parked in was smoldering!!!!.

Today, I fired 25 rounds. I spent 2.5 hours helping a friend to show his wife just how much fun shooting can be and helping her to learn techniques that will make the experience more satisfying. I packed out 50lbs of trash and 1,000 pieces of brass. I met several good people and scouted some locations I had not been to before. Over all, a very good day shooting.:D

kphamx, you should be grateful that you didnt receive a littering ticket on top of being returned to the spot to clean.

...think it's a good idea to create a general rule and courtesy sticky on how to operate and leave BLM shooting areas?

BLM has already done so:

http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/elcentro/recreation/shooting.html

- Shoot only retrievable, freestanding targets.

The key word there is "retrievable". Clays are not retrievable. In theory they could be, but in practice they are not.

- Always pick up and remove targets, empty shells, and any other debris after you have finished.

It was already said but to emphasize, if you pack it in, pack it out!

Funny how the Sheriffs map is 33 pages of where not to shoot and 0 pages of where it is legal to shoot.

I have posted on the BLM facebook that they should devote a little time to the shooting sport to inform those who desire to shoot safely and legally.
I get every single "BLM newsbytes" for at least 2 to three years now and the only mention EVER of the shooting sports has been the fire that was supposed to have been started by a shooter off Shockey truck trail. I have to assume that is now closed also.

We get no help, no maps, no instructions, other than our own "it's the right thing to do" judgment. How are we supposed to bring in new people to our sport and our right when all we have are noisy regulated ranges? Don't get me wrong I have busted THOUSANDS and thousands of birds at P2K and got my hunting license from Bob Fusco back in the early 80's when it was San Diego County Fish and Game, but it is nice to be able to take a few new shooters out to a quite area that is easy to explain gun safety before shooting without ear protection on.

I have absolutely no place to shoot my .50 so it has become a $10K safe queen. Don't mean to get so wrapped around the axle but hey what the heck are they doing with all the money that we pay them in off road fee's, hunting licenses that don't get used and your taxes from Day passes etc. if they can't just write up a page of DO's and don'ts with a little map of if you want to shoot you shoot HERE in THIS direction and max calibers are X and check THIS website for daily weekly restrictions like high fire hazards. OK I done flame away.

This is from the Colorado BLM site. Similar rules - just with different words. It applies just as much here as it does in CO:

• Does not create a public hazard, public nuisance or direct threat to public safety and use. This includes the shooting any weapon from, across, or toward any road or trail, regardless of the road or trail surface, shooting in an unsafe manner, or shooting in an unsafe direction.

• Does not damage or destroy natural features, native plants, cultural resources, historic structures or government/private property. This includes using any vegetation or structure as a target, backstop, or target holder.

• Does not facilitate and create a condition of littering, refuse accumulation and abandoned personal property. The shooting of any glass bottle, container, or material that would break into small pieces and create a hazard or litter is prohibited. All spent shells or brass are considered litter and must be removed by the shooter.

• Does not violate an existing use restriction, closure order or supplementary rules notice.

• You must not possess or discharge a firearm or explosive device in violation of any applicable State Law.

The opportunity to shoot on BLM land can be considered a privilege, in that they can take it away if we screw things up.

Was out there today and visited a few spots. They were all cleaner than I have seen them in long while. One in particular still had evidence of rakes used. The shooters I took today had no issue with cleaning up afterwards. It's easier to keep it clean if it's clean to begin with.

Just a quick reminder... use or possession of steel core ammo is PROHIBITED on BLM lands here. There have been two fires started by steel core ammo in the last month. In addition to the $500-$1000 ticket, there is a good chance the shooters will be stuck with the cost of putting out the fire, and more. Multiple aircraft, engines, brush rigs, hand crews, etc. My guess? $30k-$50k...easy.

Always wanted to do one of these when I had some spare time.

However after watching all the harassment at Glamis last weekend, (the BLM must have made millions on that weekend alone by harassing everyone trying to have a good time) I'm out. Confiscating peoples fuel jugs because they were not in spill-proof containers, giving indecent exposure tickets to people going to the bathroom behind their trailers etc, impounding peoples ATV's Bikes and Buggys who forgot to register their stuff while it was sitting over the summer etc. They can suck it. Hell I got popped for improper display of my $150 permit because I didn't want to permanently stick it to my Dad's truck I was borrowing. Now I need another $150 sticker for my own truck since they forced me to apply the sticker while the ranger had her hand on her pistol while she watched me do it.

BLM is RICH! they can go clean up their own ****, that's what we are paying them for.

I completely understand your frustration! I have been going to the desert for around twenty years, but don't go nearly as often as I used to due to the harassment. Believe me, I get it! That being said...

BLM is not obligated to clean up the mess left by irresponsible shooters. Frankly, we aren't obligated to go out there to clean up after them either, but the alternative is losing one of the few remaining public areas in San Diego county that is open to target shooting. The choice is yours.

I get it but everything you stated that people got busted for was for breaking the law and I'm sure there was some discretion used on the indecent of exposure. I went to clean up BLM simply because I want to keep a place to shoot that is close to home and not a two hour drive.

So everyone in the desert got busted for all the things they weren't supposed to be doing?that has nothing to do with those of us that are obeying the rules and trying to keep what little we still have available open. We clean the spots for us , not for them. It's like getting mad for getting caught using tannerite ( which you aren't supposed to use on blm land)

I completely understand where he is coming from; sheriff and BLM can be absolute *****s out there (Glamis). It's not unusual for them to give you a hard time, even when you aren't doing anything wrong. I've been there.

The thing that everyone needs to keep in mind, is that LE's behavior out in Glamis, and our efforts to keep OUR land out here open to shooters, are two completely separate issues.

From my understanding one needs is a permit which can be obtained here:

http://www.preventwildfireca.org/Campfire-Permit/

Additional info here:

http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/info/iac/campfirepermits.html

With that said, it would be prudent to contact the local office to ensure additional safety restrictions are not in effect in SD.

I started a new thread to have a meet and greet to try and plan some future events, and exchange info.

I went out Monday to one of the lower spots and it was trashed. Hauled out a TV, some metal, bunch of clays, oh-and a boat load of brass. Almost felt like I got paid for my volunteer work.

I have a gas grill if we set something up, someone with a truck would have to pick it up cause my POS ranger won't make it.

If anyone is looking for a place to shoot and clean, without going all the way out to the desert, there is a shooting spot that is technically in Imperial County but very near SD line, that is trashed(or was when I was out last). Its BLM and outside of the fire hazard zone. It's a rocky area but has a sandy bottom, fine for pistols and short range rifle shooting.

Hey all,
I am brand new to the forum, been lurking around for a little bit here and there...
I'm very interested in meet up/clean up sometime soon, however due to my work schedule I am only available on weekends. If anyone wants to get together let me know- I live in North County (San Marcos/Escondido area)

Thanks!
