Has anyone had a great find at big 5? Good markings, nice barrels, etc.

Is this just an academic question? All the local Big5 stores I've looked at recently don't have any Mosins.

But I'll play: I got an all matching laminated Tula a couple years ago, was $130.

The Mosins that I have seen on the rack are pretty beat up. I have heard they hold the good ones in the back. Maybe someday I will get a chance to dig through their inventory.

Partly academic. I wanted to see if it's worth it to paruse my local big5. They have four. I live in Washington, tho.

after about 10 big 5 mosins, and not 1 single bad one i am done buying mosins just because they are on sale.
if i see a mint hex tula on sale i would buy it. i am not a izzy hater but the metal finish does seem nicer on pre war tulas over a izzy.i let a real nice 1928 tula get away because my wife wreaked here car and i sold it DAM. nicest mosin i ever had condition wise. my pawn shop 1955 Romanian m 44 is still my FAV.

The big 5s I just checked only had the sniper rifles for $619. If they are genuine I would think that's a good deal, but I bet they are not. None had any regular mosins, but they expect to get more eventually (in 2 months).

I got these 2 beauties on Black Friday at Big 5. 1940 Izzy (blonde) and 1940 Tula (dark). Both 100% matching and basically mint with zero wear at all. Bayonets and all accessories included. About $260 OTD for both.

This is true, I heard from a former employee working at the Big5 across town from my closest Big5 that the manager at my local location sifts through all the good ones and holds them in the back until they go on sale.
He then buys them with his employee discount to boot.
Apparently the employee I was talking to about Mosins got his hours cut back so much he had to quit because he sold one of the managers "Keep aways"

Picked up a 1943 dated M44 there a few years ago for 70 bucks.. pretty pleased with that. I will only buy something there at 90-120 bucks(prices these days) if it is "6" or above on the 7.62x54r rarity scale.

i have one, the scope and mounts are proper russian parts made off the org tooling. BUT they were made way after WW11. the installation is top quality. my scope zeroed in without having to file brackets or do shimming. so if you just want a nice shooter and you buy retail fine. if you have a C&R get a real WW11 sniper for a little more [ r guns]. some say the century PU sniper you can get for under 600 are still not the real deal ?.

I found a '22 Izhevsk Hex ex-Dragoon. It was being held in the back by one of the employee's who told me about it, so I bought it... :)

Yes. 1933? Hex with matching numbers, clean barrel, and good stock. I passed on it but saw a post from a Calgunner looking for a nice Hex. I had the rifle on hold and passed the info along to the calgunner for him to purchase. He bought it and is very happy.

LOVE BIG 5 !!! I got a '34 Tula Hex Ex-dragoon all matching and a '44 Izzy Ex-sniper counter bored. Both on sale for $109+tax and I combined them on the same DROS for saving. The '34 Tula is pure mint ... you can still see machine marks in the grooves of the bore. The sniper's there are not worth it from a re-sale standpoint IMO. If you just want a shooter though and don't have a FFL 03 to get a Classic Arms one sent to you, then go ahead. They are made from regular infantry rifles though, good condition yes but not a lot of collectability there so re-sale is tough. Now that I have my FFL 03 though I don't shop at Big 5 as much but I still like to keep my eye and see what they have for sale ... you never know what you can find ;)

Thanks. Actually The first rifle I ever bought. Very lucky find indeed. Didn't know a thing about them, it just told me it was the one to buy out of the five they had in stock. Only thing that sucks is none of the numbers match.

It's a refurb, so that's not such a big deal. The fact that it is a triple MO ex-dragoon is the collectible aspect, not the serial numbers.

Picked up a M38 in a rare style of M38 stock

Ex-dragoon with a 99% barrel and brand new unsanded postwar stock...

the manager that used to work there would to set aside the gems for the collectors he knew,, kept them out of bubba hands. :)
