A fool and his money soon are departed

That is often the case, but not necessarily so in this case.;)

Looks like a long side rail sniper rifle missing the scope. I guess they can see the thick sidewall - I can't.

There is one without a matching scope mount on Gunbroker that has hit the 8K mark.

No idea what a long side rail goes for without any scope.

Just some added info, most German WWII sniper rifles you see for sale are fakes. Many are very good fakes. So much so that I saw that experienced collectors were no longer buying any German WWII sniper rifle unless it was a long side rail. This is because these particular rifles have a much thicker sidewall than a normal 98K. So you know at least the rifle is not a fake.

bcd (Gusoloff) is reported to have made more than CE (JPSauer). A well respected collector said in March of 2012 on another forum that mismatched bcds go for between 9 to 12k depending on condition. Matching 10 to 14k depending on condition.

Sauer examples go for more. They were discussing this because a near perfect Sauer that was in a sniper rifle book at a RIA auction went for 30k which to them was 5 to 10k too much.

I don't know enough to bid on a nice LSR. But if someone had gotten the OP's example for between 175 to 300 bucks, he would have been a lucky MoFo.

This one is a Sauer assembled one.

How can you tell?

You see a 37 instead of a 749?

I can't read crap.

Stock bolt takedown disk, metal finish, serial font all point to JPS. Top proof may not be legible 37 but it is clearly recognizable and definately not 749. And also in one pic can see e/37 on right side receiver. Has interesting barrel too.

Chop the barrel to 16-inches, and slap it all in a plastic stock, and put one of them red dot thingy on top. :D

Yup, junk the side mount too and you will have made a 250 dollar rifle out of a 4k plus one.

I give up on your statement that the barrel is interesting.

It does not appear to be a MG15 adapted barrel.

I do not see an avk, arrow logo, cxm, ce or ch on it so I cannot identify the maker.

Inquiring minds would like you to tell us what you see - ?

Does it have something to do with the NS 5 marks the seller reported?

98K barrels are 600 mm long, 23.62 inches, The seller states 23 inches, but just a rounding error - ?

It's because it does not have those barrel codes is why it is interesting. I'm still trying to figure out who made that barrel. Can't make out the waffenamp on the barrel?

Well I can't come to any conclusions on that barrel; just that it is not expected for that rifle. Looks like it is in SoCal, so one of you guys down there need to buy it and take some better pics for us!

Cool. Thanks!
See that proof to the right of '5' on the barrel?
Do you have a better pic of that?
