I was following a thread on the for sale section on a Cobray 11/9..

http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=67067

I know it is not on the ban list but does have a threaded barrel, which means it should be registered and can;t be sold in Cali.

Questions..

1) If the owner/seller just filed off the threads, then could it be sold in the state? Thats the only evil feature right?

2) If he removes the threaded barrel sold just the "lower" would that be ok?

3) If he got a non threaded barrel and attached it, could he then sell it in Cali? And sell the original thread barrel to the same buyer?

The gun for sale did not have a threaded barrel.

Correct.

Yep.

3) If he got a non threaded barrel and attached it, could he then sell it in Cali? And sell the original thread barrel to the same buyer?
Yes to both questions.

This is from DOJ website (http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/regagunfaqs.php#15) (so disclaimer on accuracy -- note they can't let go of the now void "AR/AK series" language after how many years?) but there appears to be some way to "cancel" your registration for unlisted AWs (not sure of the exact process):

13. If I registered my SB 23 assault weapon and now I remove the characteristic(s) that make it an assault weapon, can I cancel the registration?

Yes. If the defining characteristics establishing a firearm as an SB 23 assault weapon are removed, it is no longer an assault weapon and the registration may be canceled. However, once the registration is canceled, you can never replace the characteristic(s) that make it an assault weapon, or you will be in possession of an illegal weapon.

THIS APPLIES ONLY TO FIREARMS DEFINED AS ASSAULT WEAPONS BY CHARACTERISTICS (Penal Code section 12276.1, SB 23). THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO ORIGINAL ROBERTI-ROOS ASSAULT WEAPONS OR AK and AR-15 SERIES WEAPONS IN THAT REMOVAL OF THEIR CHARACTERISTICS DOES NOT NEGATE THE REQUIREMENT TO REGISTER THE ASSAULT WEAPON.

I was looking at his first thread where he pulled the gun for sale and some replies were deleted. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=67047 (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=67047)some were questioning the legality of the gun and some his integrity. I do not know if it was covered in one of the deleted posts so I’ll ask it here.

included in the sale is a nice extra barrel with fake can attached in a perminant fashion, so if you like, you can always install it in the gun, and still not have to worry about threaded barrel problems.

I know the gun is legal, if he was in LA I would have bought it. But isn’t the fake can illegal? A barrel shroud that protects your hands from getting burnt makes the gun an aw???

Since I am nitpicking maybe he should have used “must” instead of “supposed”. Is he leaving open the possibility of letting you have the 36rd magazine?

i also have a 36rd magazine ( which is supposed to be sold out of state) and a 10rd magazine (both zytel)
