Hello All,

I have posted an introduction in the new members area and as a result another member pointed me to this forum.

I live in Cameron Park and I am looking to purchase my first handgun, a S&W 586/686. I am looking for recommendations for Gunsmiths/Gun Shops and local shooting range / club to join.

Thanks!

Welcome!!

We have some reviews on gun shops in ElDorado and a few other places around the area floating around in the sac section. Spend some time reading the posts and ask questions if you have em, this is a place to learn.

ElDub is close you you, he can chime in, if he isn't working, and let you know what he has found.

NotEnufGarage can probably give you some info on where to find a good revolver. Seems like he has one for every finger I have so he has to know something.

MM, Welcome!

We're doing several things in the immediate future:

A C3 Open meeting on Jan 9, meet and greet and input from membership
A range cleanup in Forest Hills, weather permitting, I think Jan 19.
And mostest and bestest, the Sacramento Monthly Shoot at Sac Valley Shooting Center in Ione, which isn't too far from you. Come on out and meet the gang, whether you've bought your handgun or not.

Monthly Shoots are the last Saturday or Sunday of the month, at Sac Valley. Other regular shoots are being planned now.

(ElDub1950 is near you and he has a favorite gun shop up that way, that he really likes. PM him and he'll tell you)

Where is the C3 open meeting to be held? What is the date for the monthly shoot?

I will PM ElDub1950 about the gun shop.

Thank you!

Congratulations on joining the site. You will meet some good people here and get some great advice. You can learn more here in a a few months than most people learn in a lifetime.

I also applaud your choice in revolvers. I am revolver guy, Smith and Wesson and Ruger specifically. There are many good sources in the Sacramento area. I bought a new 586 last April and I am very happy with it. It shoots as well as my 50 year old S&W Highway Patrolman. I personally lean toward the 586 becuase I am old school and stainless guns don't appeal to me.

I will give you one piece of advice though. Check the barrel to frame alignment on your new revolver before you lay down your cash. The barrel on my new 586 was over-tightened at the factory and this threw the sights out of alignment. I couldn't zero the pistol. I returned the gun to the factory (they paid for shipping both ways) and in 8 days I had the gun back and it was perfect.

I talked to my favorite gunsmith in Redding at Jones Fort and he says he has seen this in every manufacturer, not just S&W. The demand for guns is so high they just crank them out. I love my new 586, the quality is there and it shoots outstanding.

If you PM me I will send you some photos of my revolver before I shipped it out, if I haven't deleted them already. This will show you what to look for.
