it would probably help to sell it if you provided reticle type and leupy pn#
if it's a M3 or M1, illuminated? etc etc... :)

I think the fact there are so many fakes floating around out there, maybe the reason everyone wants a pic of the serial number on the bottom of the scope as that is one area along with the MK4 stamping that help distinguish the real thing from the fake/copy. This is not to say the one here is a fake but here's a link to the Leupols site with the warning about the fakes out there and how to tell them apart from the real ones.

If you're selling a loopy like this, you need to not only post pics of the serial # but the 5 digit model number. Also, is the box included? Flip ups? etc...

You'll get no love until this is posted.

Pardon my ignorance but how would a serial tell you if the scope is real or not? I'm of course assuming the fakes have serial numbers as well?

I recall the fakes all had the same serial number. Leupold will verify over the phone if the serial number is kosher or not. I can't find the thread where it showed pics of the fake, including the serial number in question. Fond this though I cannot tell if the pics are still there due to the filters here at work, but the suspect serial numers are listed there.......8888SC and 9999SC are fakes I believe.

Leupolds aren't the only fakes out there either. Here is a thread about the others.

Just some info for you guys...

1) The 3.5-10x40 Mark 4 scopes only have a serial number engraved on the bottom. There is no other engraving. All of the variable power versions I've seen have been this way. I've only seen the fixed power with the full Mark 4 engravings.

2) The link you post is to the brand new FFP (First Focal Plane) version which your friend's is definitely not. It's closer to this model: LINK (http://www.swfa.com/pc-3171-297-leupold-35-10x40-mark-4-lrt-30mm-riflescope.aspx)

3) Now, if you buddy's scope has a GOLD ring on the objective, it's NOT a Mark 4. It's a VX-III...one of the older "tactical" Leupolds before they move them over the Mark 4 line...FYI, the older VX-III versions don't command nearly the same prices as the Mark 4 versions.

A picture of the end label on the box would tell the buyer everything they need to know. ;)

looks like it is the non-illuminated Mark4 LR/T with M1 turrets and Mildot reticle.
