This is a very interesting idea. I think these guys are on to something here.

Brilliant

I had a similar thought pop into my head a while back, but also using a pendulum like a coocoo clock which would, in theory, make it run longer on a pull.

People must be impressed by it, since the inventors raised almost six times the dollar amount they requested. :tank:

Do the math. A 20 pound weight dropped five feet over a period of 18 minutes is only about 125 milliwatts. There is no free lunch.

No lunch....but there is light!

Really stupid idea. Just shows how ignorant people are. I had a bicycle light generator
30 years ago. You ride & you get light. Would be simple to drive that generator by
some other means. Old stuff with a new BS pitch & everyone sucks it up.

Great idea.

its the energy sipping led that makes this possible

remember the shake light its neat to see a gear driven generator but its basically like an old clock

the freeplay radios come with a light now they use a wind up clockwork generator vs the cheaper gravity one

kind of a cool idea

looks like power terminals on the front of the unit, plug in accessories to charge?

I think we need way more inventions like this in the world. To anyone talking crap about it... It's not made for you and your first world life. It's not meant to light up your big house or recharge your iPads. This was invented for rural third world countries that basically have no electricity. It's to help better THEIR lives, not yours.

LOL, you did the same thing I did when I saw this: suspect a hoax and run some numbers! :oji:

Unless my math is off, you're giving them too much credit by a factor of about 9.8 (treating the 20 lbs as a weight instead of a mass in the calculation of Joules). Here are my calcs:

20 pounds = 9.07 kg
5 ft = 1.52m
18 min = 1080 sec

If you treat the 9.07 kg as a mass, you get 9.07kg * 9.8m/sec2 * 1.52m = 135 Joules of energy. 135 Joules expended over 1080 seconds would be 135J/1080 sec = 125 mW.

If you instead treat the 9.07 kg as weight, you lose the gravitational acceleration of 9.8 m/sec2 in the calculation of energy and get only 9.07kg * 1.52m = 13.8J or 12.8 mW over the 18 minutes.

An efficient LED light produces around 150 lumens/watt, so using your numbers (20 lb mass) you get 18.75 lumens, or using my numbers (20 lb weight) you get only 1.92 lumens.

Either way, that's a pretty piss-poor light! :)

I think the idea is in its infancy. I think instead of going 20lbs going 2oz X100 units with advancing tech will yield better power sources.

If 20 years ago you told anyone you could hold 60 gigs of data on a chip smaller than a finger nail you would have been laughed at and called an idiot.

The science nerds would have all come out of the woodwork explaining to you in great detail how that was just impossible...using charts... math and common sense for the day....

well think it over guys...
