Is there a definitive way to prove that a Chinese SKS is 50 years old so would fall under C&R? Just trying to research the subject and have come to a roadblock. Can it be done with a serial number? Any help would be great.

Edited to let B. Ric answer since he is God Almighty in re: SKSs and has no grace.

No. They are specifically prohibited from being C&R by the ATF because the Chinese manufacturers did not use any standardized/recognizable marking/dating system.

Yes and no, check out the recent ones that came onto the market through CAI. There were some Chinese SKS's that were produced before the Norinco's were produced that are C&R

The recent ones that were classified as C&R, most likely because there was documentation proving where they had been for the last 50+ years, seem to confirm this numbering system for the early models from /26\ Jianshe Arsenal. http://www.yooperj.com/SKS-24.htm

Good to know. That is what I was running into. Seems a tough sell to prove it unless you originally bought it as a legitimate C&R from a LGS.

Well, the thousands of FFL03 holders who bought C&R Chinese SKS rifles in the last 2 months from J&G, Classic, Wideners, and AIM will be surprised by that revelation.

"Norinco" never produced any SKS rifles. Norinco was the exporting company which exported most of the SKS type rifle into the US back in the 80's and 90's.

All Chinese SKS rifles were produced at Government arsenals. Some were modified before import to add scope mounts, and shortened barrels. But all were made in the same factories as were the original military rifles.

The latest batch of Chinese made SKS rifles sold by Century sure blurred the definition of what is a C&R, as in reality there is no absolute way to date when there rifles were produced.

Century has not come forth and published the exact criterion as to why and how this latest batch of rifles are being classified as C&R's.
