Going up north late February. Looking to stay near the Art Institute. The place I am looking at is called Inn on Broadway http://www.roomstays.com/hotel/302043

So is that place ok? I want to be able to walk to the store at night if possible. If I can't walk at night, thats not a deal breaker, as long as the area is safe. I don't want hookers and drug dealers arguing in the next room... I am going to have kids with me.

Looking in the $100 per night range.

I would say don't stay in the city, but since you have to you should know that crack heads, hoodlums, bangers, thugs, etc. rob people even in nicer areas in SF. I probably wouldn't be walking to the liquor store at midnight regardless of where your staying.

Take your kids to the Hotel Tomo right near Japan town.

I stayed there before its kinda cool. Right across the street are all the Japan town shops with toys and stuff kids might like.

So do you think we should stay out of the city and drive in to see the tourist stuff? Where is a good place to stay?

There are places outside of the city where you can walk to the store at any hour of night and not get jacked by a crack head. I am not saying you would get robbed for sure, but when I go into the city at night I remind myself to be cognizant of my surroundings. Just a lot of sketchy people in the city and it seems like every 1 in 2 times me or a friend goes to the city some crazy stuff happens. Cell phone thefts have been happening a lot lately especially in better areas.

I live about 2 blocks from there. The wife walks the dogs at night in the neighborhood no problems. I ask she carries mace, she usually doesn't.

There's a little corner market a block away, a subway about the same distance, then tons of stuff a little more than a block on Polk St. It get kinda busy there at night with the 20 somethings and the bars, but all in all an okay crowd. A few homeless regulars, but we've never had an issue.

The street you're looking at staying on (boradway and van ness) is very busy, so some road noise is to be expected. Parking stinks, but I'm pretty sure they have a garage there.

Love SW Hotel. Clean, centrally located, and nicely appointed. Well worth it. Check it out. It is close to everything.
