For folks interested in late 1800s weaponry, usage and tactics, this is an excellent read by the great Winston Churchill himself.

Churchill had a high opinion of the Lee-Metford magazine rifle (precursor to the SMLE) and it speed of use compared to the Martini Henrys. Even the Martinis were dangerous out to 1400 yards, per Churchill.
