I wouldn't bother with the cartridge conversion. Where's the fun in that?

I get most random accessories from track of the wolf or http://www.possibleshop.com

That won't work for the caps and powder though. You can get caps and black powder substitute lots of places including Bass Pro shops. Real black powder is kind of a pain to get in CA and 777 powder works very well in your revolver so I'd go with that. If you don't want to run around local stores go to http://www.grafs.com just be aware there's a $25 hazmat fee so buy a bunch while you're there. They also have great pricing and shipping on lead balls. You probably want .454 balls although some people recommend .457.

If you need more help, just ask. I like 25 grains 777 powder (3F), a Wonder Wad, and .454 balls in my 1858.

the point of shooting black is to shoot black. Save your cartridge shooting for modern guns.

You can even have an inscription put on the gun. I'm thinking "lol brass".

Want for some good reading? spend a full day shooting nothing but black powder then go on calguns and read about semi auto pistol shooters complaining about chasing brass around, collecting it, catching it, managing it, and loading it.

Puts some good perspective on it :)

+1 on grafs. For balls/bullets.

I would try to search local for powder and caps (because of hazmat fee)

caps are usually easy to find local. It's real black that's tough. Everyone stocks pyrodex, noone stocks goex. We need to get real black reclassified from an explosive to a propellent.

As I posted elsewhere, you can get Goex, real black powder at Retting in Culver City and at the range at Angeles Range. Not the store, but only at the range. The store, on the other side of the parking lot, only sells substitute, of at least 2 brands; the range only sells Goex, real black powder to those who are, that very day, using the range; you do not have to be a member or anything.
There is a Bass Pro in Rancho Cucamonga. I don't know what they have. Yeah, I guess that is close to 80 miles one way from Winnetka.
Others are mentioning other places over here where bp and other supplies are available.

I guess I also have to question, why go with the 1858 and then seek the conversion? Why not just go with something after 1873, original equipment?

I think there's a lot to be said for just getting a couple of pounds of 777 3F (a pound is something like 200-250 shots with that revolver, $22 each) and a thing of a thousand #11 CCI caps ($45ish) and a couple of boxes of the balls ($12ish/100) and just being done with it. You would only *have* to have a source of real black powder if you shoot flintlocks.

Shipping would be $6 flat rate + $27.50 hazmat = $33.50. Not to bad if you get a bunch of balls while you're at it.

I get all my gear at Bass Pro. Pyrodex is around $22, caps around $11, and balls are $15ish. I just got into reloading and on my next Grafs order for primers and powder I am going to add a couple pounds of 3f Goex!

I'm pretty sure black powder has its own "black powder hazmat" so you don't save any money combining it with primers. That's what happened last time I tried it anyway.

Also before buying a couple of pounds of Goex, or at least before posting about it on the Internet, you might read up on the one pound limit: http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Ammunition_and_Black_Powder

Thanks to all for your help.Looks like Culver City.(thanks david)I figured with a conversion
(about 225.00) i could keep the gun loaded incase of a problem and then have some fun going out and shooting some B/P unless anyone knows a good deal on a cartridge pistol nothing to new.Or a repro after 1873.
Thanks again

Last black powder I bought was at Walker47 in Anaheim.

Real GOEX BP is the way to go. Of course, I'm just biased for the authenticity and that real BP smell. ;)

Like stated, you can get it at M.B. Retting
