Hey there,

A buddy of mine moved a bunch of his dads stuff to his house a while back, and while going through some of it, happened upon an M1 Carbine, and a Kassar .22.

He wanted to know what to do with them. I'm not entirely sure what to tell him. I'll aslo post on calguns.net...

What I see right off the bat is...
* Fathers rifles
* Son in possession
* One is .22
* The other is .223/5.56

Does he have to report them to a dealer?
Does this fall under an heirloom clause or something?
If his father passed away, what can he do?

I've heard of people having to do a PPT or interfamilial transfer post portem, i.e release to FFL, wait 10, comeback and pick them up. But I dont know...

How old is the M1 Carbine? If it's older than 50 years, your buddy needs to do nothing.

Not sure on what to do with the Kassar.

Whoops... I was thinking of the Rugar Mini14.

I meant to say .30 Carbine (7.62x33)

The kassar, IMO, I would drop off at the next "gun buy back" just to get rid of the POS.

As for the carbine, thats a nice piece of history. I'm sure it's pretty old. I'll have to find out . Is there a date where they stopped making them?

How can you tell it's age? Serial Number? Markings?

I have a soft spot in my heart for that Kassar. I bought one 30 years ago. It was a POS. LOL.

If it is older than 50 yrs (likely), than all you do is hand him some cash and shake hands.

Then you try to get .30carbine ammo as fast a you can before its all sold out

If the carbine is a real milsurp, ie, one of 11 different manufacturers during WWII, it is over 50 yrs old therefore it requires no paperwork. A commercial receiver would require paperwork.
Have you seen the heel stamp on the receiver? Curious as to the manufacture Of course pics are better. LOL
