So I am having this debate on FB with a few “guns are the root of all problems with gun violence” people, one of them is really out there .... “live in a good neighbourhood, have a dog, sign about the dog, and have a cell phone close by” and you will be safe, having a firearm will only increase a chance of an accident .... uhm yeah .... anyways, where can I get reliable statistics on violence of home invasions, burglaries, kidnapping and rape attempts where victims did not have the time to call 911 or by the time police got there it was too late .... FBI has stats but it does not have, it seems the detail I am looking for ...

Thanks

-Guns prevent an estimated 2.5 million crimes a year or 6,849 every day. Often the gun is never fired and no blood (including the criminal’s) is shed.
-Every day 550 rapes, 1,100 murders, and 5,200 other violent crimes are prevented just by showing a gun. In less than 0.9% of these instances is the gun ever actually fired.
-90% of all violent crimes in the U.S. do not involve firearms of any type.
-Less than 1% of firearms will ever be used in the commission of a crime.
-Two-thirds of the people who die each year from gunfire are criminals being shot by other criminals.
-94.4% gang murders are committed with guns.135 Gangs are responsible for between 48% and 90% of all violent crime.
-None of over 2,220 firearms recovered from crime scenes by the Minneapolis police in 1987-89 were machine guns.
-0.7% of seized guns in Detroit in 1991-92 were machine guns.
-Schoolyard shootings have been occurring since at least 1974, so it is not a new phenomenon due to increases in gun ownership.
-More than 50% of these terrorists started thinking about their assaults two or more weeks before the shooting, and 75% planned-out their attacks.

Why cite statistics when you can cite District and SCOTUS cases:

Warren v. District of Columbia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_v._District_of_Columbia)

Castle Rock v. Gonzales (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Rock_v._Gonzales)

Those usually take the wind out of "Just call 911 and wait for the police" arguments.

Don't debate the 2A on FB.

Oh, give it another ten years of wasting your time debating, you'll realize that facts and consequences just don't matter to some people.

Faster if you're smarter than I am.

Ultimately, unless you're dealing with a person you see every day who hasn't really made up their mind, you're spinning your wheels.

I know no one wants to see that kind of thing go unanswered, but they just do it again and again and again and you end up committing yourself to posting the same rebuttal 200 times.

Don't debate the 2A on FB.

Excellent advice that I don't follow... and I know better.

For those times when people say, "I've NEVER heard about someone carrying a gun stopping any crime": direct them to my sig line re 50+ (currently) examples of LTCs/CCWs saving lives. A handful of the examples are off-duty LEOs, but they're what I call "virtual CCWers": no body armor, no radio, no backup, so pretty much just a well trained and experienced CCWer.

my favorite are articles/stats that show that guns dont stop mass murders, and their data is based on filtering all information only showing times where 4+ people were killed. Seeing as there is no stat/prediction for the number of murders that would have happened if they hadnt been stopped, all the times where an attack was stopped by another gun at 3 or fewer murders do not show up. Pointless to explain though because anybody who thoughtlessly believes the first stat will have no part of the explanation. In the end arguing with anybody who is serious enough about it to post on FB has made up their mind to the point where no counter arguments are valid.
