http://sd08.senate.ca.gov/news/2012-12-18-yee-introduces-assault-weapon-bill-supports-de-leon-ammunition-and-lieu-school-safet

SB 47 is modeled after a bill he introduced last year but that was held by the State Assembly. The bill prohibited semi-automatic weapons like AR-15s and AK-47s from having devices known as “bullet buttons” and “mag magnets,” which allow the gun to be easily reloaded with multiple rounds of ammunition. SB 47 will also prohibit add-on kits that allow high-capacity magazines.

NOTE: Calguns mods will be monitoring this thread VERY carefully. Some of your posts may disappear - no offense intended but we simply cannot let our bantering help the opposition pen a better bill. Be aware that edits and deletions will be taking place actively and without warning.

While I'm sure he'd like to see all this pass, it won't.

As I said elsewhere, Yee is cutting trees and making stumps for his CA Sec. State run.

Not to say this bill can't hurt us, but in present form it would go nowhere. Watch for amendments.

Is this guy for real? We already knew the AW provisions would be reintroduced, but yearly background checks? Locked trigger and stored in a locked box? How, exactly, does he intend to overcome Heller when immediate access to self defense is taken way in exactly the same way D.C. tried?

I guess time will tell how much this will get diluted. At least we know his long/medium term end-game:

*****

This looks more and more like European style firearms regulation, which in their minds is "reasonable" and "does not run afoul of the Second Amendment." The mental disconnect necessary to make this argument and keep a straight face is astonishing.

Pretty much all I can say at this point is that the NRA, CRPA, SAF, CCRKBA, CGF, et al. are going to have a very busy year in 2013. Time to up my donation and get involved.

This is going to be interesting. The more they go "full frontal" the more their flanks are exposed. It might be a game to them, but the outcome can be fully in our favor.

Remember, a Yee soulmate, Chicago Mayor Daley, is the one who gave us McDonald. We should send him Christmas cards and thank him for being so pig headed. I would love to add Yee to this Christmas list of stubborn ideologues who tremendously benefited the gun rights.

We are not going to do that thing again where we tell them about all of the flaws and how to fix them before this comes to a vote are we?

Given the wording of "add-on kits" and the proposed magazine restrictions, it's obvious they were watching us last time.

But sadly we are too full of ourselves to keep quiet until the right time to strike. We are a community that seems to think silence is acquiescence.

And unfortunately many posters are thinking checkers over chess.

So basically any gun has to be transported the same as an RAW? Are we to assume bullet button/featureless will become RAW or will a whole new class of "Bullet Button Registered Semi-Auto Rifle" be created? This law is murky as heck and will do the impossible by uniting ALL gun owners because I most hunters in this state already pay increasing registration fees to hunt and will not take kindly to this.

I want to wish everyone a safe enjoyable holiday and a Merry Christmas. Soon, after the New Year of festivities.....

We will embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon us.
The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with us.
In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, we will bring about the destruction of the California socialist anti-gun war
machine, the elimination of Unconstitutional tyranny over the oppressed peoples of California and security for ourselves in a free world.

Our task will not be an easy one.
The enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 2013! Much has happened since the Clinton triumphs of
1994.The SCOTUS have inflicted upon the Anti's great defeats,
in open ruling, man-to-man. Our Gura offensive has seriously reduced their
strength in the courtroom and their capacity to wage war on the ground.
Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority of litigation and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. :gura:

The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to
Victory!

I have full confidence in our courage and devotion to duty and skill in
this battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great
and noble undertaking."

His website states that:

If you live outside of Senate District 8, the best way to contact Senator Yee is by calling his office.

Well... the phone numbers are listed on the left side. Maybe call and give his aides an earful of how you feel as someone who lives in California.

Capitalizing on the deaths of small children for political gain is in VERY poor taste.

Senator Yee wants to hear from YOU about SB 47

Unfortunately, he does not want to hear from us.

He is termed out in the Senate and the only way he can hope to keep a political life after that is by pandering to the Democratic Party's leaders in hopes of being nominated to run for another state office. He is attempting to do this by introducing a large number of extremely left-leaning bills.

I doubt that he cares if the bills pass or not.

This makes him more dangerous to freedoms, not less. He is desperate.

Don't fall into this trap; this is exactly the kind of response they are soliciting when they ask people to call in. Sen. Yee and his staff would have a better understanding of whether this tactic actually worked or not when it came to drumming up support, but those racist voicemail recordings did go a long way toward confirming the "redneck hick gun owner" stereotype in the media.

And all the while making them look "reasonable" for wanting a "dialogue" on gun control.

oh I feel ya. I'm just hoping nobody does it again

On sheer numbers alone, I can pretty much guarantee that some enraged individual will call in and record a message that will be broadcast to the world on the nightly news. Getting that kind of a reaction, as the saying goes, is easier than shooting fish in a barrel, especially when it involves such a drastic, draconian change to the laws in this state.

In todays world the words of the Constitution are over shadowed by knee-jerk emotionalism.

I am gut wrenched angry and sad over the actions of each and everyone of these 20 something mentally ill white kids but I refuse to throw the Constitution under the bus because of it.

If these cowardly elected officials would author some meaningful legislation that allowed schools to recommend individuals for mental health evaluations instead of sweeping mental illness under the rug like they do now and will do in the future, I would be supportive.

Our society spends so much money on these people, most of the homeless in my town are either substance abusers or mentally ill, or both. The financial cost to society is enormous and pretty much consumes my towns LE resources dealing with them.

Laws that infringe on the healthy members of society, 99.9%, are not going to solve this problem, money and facilities that treat the .1% will make the difference.

I am tired of being the Target, I pay the Taxes, I obey the Law - target the Mentally Ill, screen for them in your schools, they are the ones that be should deprived of their Rights.

Looks like Adam Keigwin is behind this. Locked guns at all times when not in use? Didn't Washington DC get kinda taken to court for this?

From KTVU.com:
"We've always lost some Democrats on gun control bills," said Yee's spokesman, Adam Keigwin. "Now we can afford to still lose some Democrats and still hopefully pass it."

After 9/11 99.9% of the populace and politicians were demanding war with Afghanistan and Iraq, how many came to regret that? The point I am trying to make is that we do not make good decisions in times of angst and high emotions. We should give it some time....let the family's mourn (not exploit the situation for selfish political agenda's) and once all the facts are in, begin a discussion (a logical one) on how to prevent acts like this. Personally, I dont think they can be prevented. After all, crazy people do crazy things.

Obviously California has its own separate set of problems that are much more draconian in nature than what could ever be played out on the national stage. Here there is a somewhat realistic chance all the progress made in the last 6 or 7 years could be snuffed out by two ideological crusaders. This time with a supermajority in the legislature. All this perfect timing of lib election victories at all levels and all these so called mass shootings created a perfect storm. Really depressing actually.

Much has happened since the Clinton triumphs of
1994.The SOTUS have inflicted upon the Anti's great defeats,
in open ruling, man-to-man.

I personally agree that the CA restrictions on rifles are obviously good enough... in so much as that i cannot find a single recorded case where a crime was committed with a bullet-buttoned rifle.

I humbly submit to you that we should not react to this bill (if it says what it is purported to say) with righteous indigence; yet we should demand the legislature to demonstrate a single violent crime that was committed with a "buttoned" rifle.

I am certain that they cannot find an instance in this state.

Once the text has been made available, SB47 will get it's 'official' thread. (It is not yet at http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/bilinfo.html - tomorrow, maybe.)

I remind you all, on the forums do not rewrite the bill to make it better. Let the defects go unremarked. Don't post things like 'well, at least they are not ...', or 'is xxx included?' because they will and it will be.

Please fight for our rights by donating to any and all gun rights orgs that you can afford to....NRA, CRPA, SAF, CALGUNS Foundation, etc. Fight this with your pen (writing your local congress person) and/or wallet. We are in for a big fight, and we all need to help out as much as we can.....everybody. Bickering and panicking on an online forum is not going to accomplish much as far as fighting for our rights. Once time passes, and cooler heads prevail, we will see when the dust settles where we stand.

Hey guys, can I ask a favor. Please stop making the similarities to Nazi Germany with the sewed on yellow rifle or communal shower. I'm with you all on this, believe me.

The Nazis slaughtered 20 million people, my own grandfather was rescued by the British in 1945 at Bergen Belsen, he was getting ready to be shipped to Auschwitz for death. He did have two tattoos from the camps he was at. He fought for the British, was captured and he was Jewish. Instead of the regular POW camp, he was sent to a concentration camp. He wasn't repatriated until Israel became a state in 1948.

As egregious as I feel whats coming down the pike, we have to keep things in perspective. We aren't going to be rounded up like cattle, separated from our wives and children and sent off to work camps and be gassed.

We need to fight this, but I find it a little insulting when these comparisons are being made since I have family members who actually lived through this.

You're right. I'm just pissed off. My reference was to point out the similarities between Nazi law and what the social democrats are doing.

Dave

Nope. If we're going for victim status - I match you.

Uncle. Auschwitz. He was big and strong so they worked him until they were liberated. Spent years in DP camps. Moved to the US. Got drafted to go to Korea (some luck). At this point, he claimed he knew how to cook (he didn't) - but for him staying close to the food was important. For the rest of his life he refused to buy a German car.

Images are important. Yellow Stars. Scarlett Letters.Tattoo'd arms. Pink Triangles. Barcode Tattoos. Marks of Cain, they all mean something. They all stir something visceral in the minds of Americans who treasure liberty the way we do. And we can use them to our advantage. We can use the symbols that they enemy used to belittle us to declare our independence and pride.

The Pink Pistols use the triangle. I recall (and my memory might be faulty) that Rabbi Kahane (http://jtf.org/israel/israel.why.jews.must.oppose.gun.control.htm)used to declare that Jews weren't going to resist further attempts at genocide.

Take these vile symbols and make them your own. Throw them in the face of your oppressors. Relish the irony of the oppressed having the will and the means to resist - and succeed.

An interesting little article I just found - I know it may be a dupe

http://boston.com/community/blogs/crime_punishment/2012/08/no_increase_in_mass_shootings.html

There is one not-so-tiny flaw in all of these theories for the increase in mass shootings. And that is that mass shootings have not increased in number or in overall body count, at least not over the past several decades.

Based on data extracted from official police reports to the FBI, the figure below shows annual incident, offender and victim tallies for gun homicides in which at least four people were murdered. Over the thirty-year time frame, an average of about 20 mass murders have occurred annually in the United States with an average death toll of about 100 per year.

So by this article all this hand-wringing is over less than 1% of Firearm Murders in the US.

I hate to say it but Soccer Moms kill more kids.

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/13-14/bill/sen/sb_0001-0050/sb_47_bill_20121218_introduced.html

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 1. It is the intent of the Legislature to enact
legislation relating to assault weapons.

Wrangler John
12-19-2012, 7:10 AM
Wow, we dodged a bullet there. I was afraid Yee was going to ban semiautomatic chopsticks so I had to eat my assault noodles with a fork. How gauche would that be?

But seriously, and more to the point, wasn't it Jerry Brown who said: "Less is more?" Which reminds me of a line from a movie, or was it something Nixon said? "Sometimes when you win, you really lose." It's kinda like that.

fizux
12-19-2012, 7:10 AM
I would like to propose the following additional legislative findings in support of Senator Yee's bill:

1. Banning guns won't reduce crime, but we "need to do something" to make ourselves feel better.
2. CT's assault weapons ban didn't work; let's try more of the same and hope for a different result.
3. In other news last week, OR's right to carry law facilitated a quick conclusion to another intended mass public shooting; however, publicizing that fact would undercut Senator Yee's agenda.
4. The ends justify the means. Really, this is for your own good.

Nice! Keep it up folks, let's get the CGF war chest overflowing. They could end up fighting on multiple fronts and will need all the help they can get.

Note to the antis: I'm not talking about actual literal war and violence. This is a non-violent battle of philosophies regarding rights and liberties. It will be fought peacefully in hearing rooms, court rooms and other areas of public discourse. If we win innocent lives will be saved in the future, and if you win many lives will be lost to evil men when good men and women have no means to defend themselves against them. If you still don't like the metaphor, then tell your guy (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/15/gun-control-jerry-nadler_n_2307340.html) to knock it off too:

"We lose 9,000 people a year, roughly, to gun violence in this country," Nadler said. "We're at war, and we haven't recognized that. We have to go to war against the people who enable the gun violence, the people who stop us from keeping guns out of the hands of mentally unstable people, of felons, and that means the NRA leadership."

But facts have never gotten in the way of politics.

Data in that report is low-value. There's no funding or mandate to report that to the state, so agencies don't do it.

Actually I think that Yee's shoplifting record is relevant. This is not in the same category as the race-baiting that repeatedly flares up, which I deplore and which can only hurt our cause. But the shoplifitng could be useful. Here is a link to refresh memories: http://www.sfgate.com/politics/article/Mug-Shot-Doesn-t-Flatter-Supervisor-3326339.php#page-1

Yee was 42 at the time and already on the School Board, so he can't laugh it off as a youthful indiscretion. Although he was never prosecuted, he left Hawaii without notifying local authorities while the case was pending. I don't know the details, but i expect that was a crime in itself, and one that he had time to reflect on and must have been planned. Having the sunscreen in his pocket he might be able shrug off on the basis that he didn't relaize that it was there. But fleeing bail is harder to duck.

I think it would be highly useful to do some research on the subject, and be ready to hit Yee with hard questions at appropriate times in the legistive process. If nothing else, it will throw him off message, and make him defend himself when he wants to be pressing the case for his bill. Plus, its the kind of "gotcha" jouralism that the mainstream media loves these days, so we might get an assist from media outlets that would typically be anti-gun.

The Chronicle article mentions $12,000 paid to an opposition reseach firm. For that kind of money, it seems like it would be a good investment for the upcoming fight.

Anybody have the mug shot they can post? We should spread that around as much as possible as well.

Yes i know that, to me he is just a Jr.Staffer though. Adam? is this you? I guess my little staffer comment bothered you? LOL

Jr. Staffer in Charge of other Jr. Staffers, makes him the chief Jr. staffer?...

I'm on your side guys and joined this site today to help the cause. I get it I'm new but I'm not a troll. Just expected a little more decorum from a group looking to protect our rights, even one on an internet forum.

Thats great but let me put this together for you.

Your in Nor Cal, you call yourself NorCalMik

You claim to be in the legislative part of government.

So...

Adam is is NorCal, he hails from Mass. (land of the irish) and he too is in the legislative field, You have 4 posts and you took exception to me calling him a "staffer"

Plus Adam thinks he is special. See where the correlation comes to play?

IIRC, Senator Yee's CoS has an 'interesting' Twitter and press relationship with the pro-gun community. Cordial isn't the right word, certainly.

A bit of bleed-over at a tense moment is likely, if regrettably expressed to others who may not know the history.

Truly amazing how well he took the bait too. Talking about shooting fish in a barrel! With an Assault rifle!!

You need to be sure the barrel is at least 16 inches tall, holds no more than 10 gallons, and has a locking lid.

Thanks, I get that it comes with the territory. I can't say Yee or Adam are ever on the same side of the issues as I am. With 2/3rds in both chambers (after special elections) it's going to be hard to stop any of these bills which is my concern and desire to follow these issues more closely than I did last session.

If you were aware of the decorum with which Keigwin comported himself during the last dustup, you would be more lenient with your judgement of your fellow civil rights activists.

I've forwarded the CGF info to most of the NorCal IDPA groups, Richmond range officers, the California IDPA Area Coordinator, and the USPSA Area 2 Coordinator. Hopefully it will help spread the word.

Where do I sign up to volunteer my time to the anti-SB47 bill?

If you signed up on a CGF volunteer list before SB249, you may not have made it to the general list. Sign up again, I'd rather delete duplicates than miss out on willing volunteers.

If you've got questions/concerns/ideas/suggestions, you can always hit me up at abailey@calgunsfoundation.org

Don't forget the chinese noodles bill:facepalm:

Not sure all got the nice reference there. This was perhaps one of my all time favorite Calguns threads.

Background: Since Yee was also working on some downright bizarre laws regarding the authenticity and safety of noodles a very clever Calgunner came up with this.

Here is the full thread: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=609068 . So worth a full read or re-read.

An interesting read with some numbers on the subject. (https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1X9uhG3U6ib9CfYKWfQ8XTQHg3tyxO9TARYPXesr0NG I)

FTA: "Contrary to popular belief, the most common weapon used is not an assault rifle. In fact, the 2011 FBI murder report (http://goo.gl/LcT8v) details 12,664 murders, 6,220 (49%) of them were committed with handguns, knives totalled up to 1,694 (13.3%) and fists accounted for yet another 3.9%. Rifles came in in absolute last with 323 murders (2.5%), excluding unknown weapons. This is further backed up by California's 2009 report which explicitly lists the bullets used by frequency (http://goo.gl/RYG0e). The most common were the 9mm handgun round at more than double the use of the 2nd place round, the .22 rifle (or occasionally handgun) round. Traditional assault rifle rounds (7.62mm & .223”) were in last place for usage. On the same Justice Bureau website (http://goo.gl/qccOz) we read; “During the offense that brought them to prison, 15% of State inmates and 13% of Federal inmates carried a handgun, and about 2%, a military-style semiautomatic gun." These statistics align with the FBI's 2.5% rifle usage rate in it’s 2011 "About Gun Crime in the U.S" report, mentioned above (http://goo.gl/XpFiF)."

Will the CGF fight this bill in the courts if one is passed with similar wording?

There is an article in the Marin IJ about a total if four bills. This is really starting to frustrate me.

janus408
12-20-2012, 8:56 AM
It does.

When the two most prominent, respected and well known 2A lobbyists in Sacramento contact me directly and tell me that the discussions on where the bill errs and how to correct it are not only making their jobs harder but are damaging efforts to prevent bad legislation I take that under very serious consideration.

When other 2A orgs that have nothing to do with these two lobbyists echo their concerns that gets noted as well.

Kestryll, since you have a dialog with these guys, what is the best way we can be pragmatic in fighting against any new legislation? Obviously in conjunction with CGF donations and NRA dues, surely there is something we can do as individual citizens to help sway this?

And is there any chance at holding a fundraiser at a shooting range somewhere? A day of sport shooting and a cookout, with proceeds going to fight new legislation? Perhaps if we could get some media coverage of average citizens enjoying the sport of shooting and campaigning for gun owners rights, it would have a positive impact on those that are indifferent to guns and gun owners?

It would be a rare time you would see the humanity of gun owners in the media, instead of us as perpetrators or people fighting to keep our rights. Just hobby-ests.

And I saw that latest report which featured one of the CGs that was very well spoken and normal looking. But it was just one man at the range, I think it would have more of an impact to see 50-60 normal guys paling around and shooting for sport.

Janus, you've been a member here for a while, do you happen to know who that "well spoken and normal looking" man was? And if you do, do you realize why an interview with him on the news is important for us? Much more important and impactful than a bunch of guys at a range.

Just making sure.. I am growing weary of some organizations, that includes the NRA when it comes to ensuring a second amendment exists rather than helping elected officials that will later demonize them.
