There's a zillion different masks out there. Which are good and which are bad? Which replacement cannisters are better? I assume if you're a right hander it's better to have the cannister mounted on the left if you can find them. That way you have a better cheek weld for shooting. Who's an expert on this stuff or is there an article out there explaining all of this?

I have one but I've reached the conclusion that they are probably useless in a SHTF situation. Especially if there's any kind of nuclear disaster. A mask is not going to protect you from beta and gamma radiation.

Gas masks have shelf lives of 20 years. Stay away from anything older.

As for filters, stick with the NATO 40mm canisters.

One more thing, as for the canisters, make sure they are in some sort of air tight container. Even though they are not being used just being exposed to the air degrades them.

Good grief. All the gasmasks they sell range between $150 and $500.

Walk into home depot and price a regular 3M half face respirator. The reusable type with removable filters.

I'll save you the trip, anywhere from $20-$60 bucks. This is what home contractors use when they want a step up from protection from the plain N95 paper dust mask.

So $100-$300 seems for a mask that will protect against full on NBC attack is priced correctly. The $10 super crazy internet deal gas mask is cheap for a reason. They can no longer pass gov't minimum requirements for protection against the desired agents and are sold off for novelty use.

I could not have said it better myself.

It amazes me on how people are willing to spend thousands of dollars on food, and weapons to protect themselves and their food in a WROL/SHTF scenario but want to spend $39.95 on a gas mask that is 30+ years old with a new filter and they think that will work. There are specs on gas masks that degrade over time. Depending on the rubber compound used in the mask it could last up to 30-35 years but how do you know what the surplus mask has been thru? How do you know how many times it has been dipped in bleach or other cleaning solvents? All of these things degrade the masks rubber.

Personally I don't think I am a professional when it comes to gas masks but I am a NEC 9598 in the Navy as well as a Emergency Management Specialist and 1st line Decontamination team manager. We just replaced our "old" gas masks for our teams and they where 5 years old.

Don't think you can buy a surplus gas mask and it will protect you from what it was intended for. If you are going to purchase a gas mask expect to spend some money on a quality mask with quality filters that are NBC rated if that is what you are looking for. If you get the XYZ filter don't think all filters are the same, they are not. Filters of the 40mm thread type are the best because they are a NATO standard and used across most Local, state and federal type people.

Just my .02. Do your research.

I don't have pics of my masks but this is a screen shot of the systems I have

Im kinda thinking the same thing. I prep on a budget and I just can't see the reason to put this ahead of alot of other more usefull items.

I could be wrong.

I agree with you that it might not be needed. If you need more food stocks and a gas mask, go with the food stocks. If you are getting to the point where food is good enoughc for now and you have security under control, spend some tax money on a gas mask system.

It might not be needed but I am not going to be "that guy" if it is...

I think we all prep because we don't want to be "that guy". Unfortunately for me this hobby can get expensive. If money was not an option I'm sure I would purchase one.
