View Full Version : Hornady .38 Special 158 gr JHP/XTP Too Potent?

Got a mid-80's S&W Model 64 2" snubbie and I'm hunting for a good self-defense round. I've been told to avoid +P, and came across the Hornady 158 gr JHP/XTP hollow point as a possibility. Any thoughts?

Too potent for what? The gun? Or your sensitive hands? :P
Should be just fine for +P, assuming you can shoot it. Obviously, the hotter the round, the more wear you put on the top strap and forcing cone.
I'd call Smith and Wesson and ask them. You can get as many opinions as you want online, some of them might even be right. At the end of the day though, getting it direct from the horse's mouth is always advised in my book.

Freq18Hz-- wow, why didn't I think of that? I'll try that approach. I've just heard +P is hard on the earlier Model 64s, but yeah, S&W would know.
