View Full Version : Noob question about MoonClips: if milled do you NEED to use them?

Like that MoonClip ready S&W 8 shot 357....
or a gun that has been milled.
Does that mean you now need to have a clip or the brass may blow out or deform, or does the brass stand up to the little gap if you go clipless?
Is there any type of clip you can use to make a clip milled gun back to normal?

Most moon clips hold the case in position.

You don't need moon clips to shoot a gun cut for them.

You don't need them in a S&W 627 Pro. They are popular in competition shooting because they are quick to reload particularly in short cartridges like 45ACP.

Next question, if the gun can be used without them, why don't manufactures machine all revolvers for them?
Seems like the sort of thing that wouldn't cost them $2 while they got the cylinder in the big CAM machine doing other stuff, but to have it done later is major bucks and big PIA and maybe the guy doing it will screw it up and you will spend more time figuring that out, etc, etc.

What calibers are you talking about?

They don't do it because it costs money to do. That's the reason for most things.
