When buying a firearm from this forum and the seller and buyer are California residents, is the transaction on the spot or do the seller and buyer conduct the transaction through a federally licensed gun dealer? I am wanting a Ruger Mark 3 in the worse way so do I find a seller on this forum, meet and exchange money and weapon and be on my merry way?

Wrong forum. You will need to go thru a FFL, make sure you have your HSC ready.

That kind of transaction can get you both in all kinds of trouble. You must go through a FFL. The correct procedure is something like: Buyer and Seller meet at CA FFL. Buyer inspects firearm and Seller receives payment (exact cash in an envelope works). FFL checks both parties ID, Buyers HSC (for a handgun), and Buyers secondary ID. Buyer fills out form. Both parties provide signatures and thumb prints. FFL asks Buyer a series of questions. Buyer pays FFL $35.00. FFL holds firearm for 10 days. Buyer picks up firearm at the end of the 10th day. Buyer goes on his merry way.

if Ruger Mark 3 is cash&carry (50 years old), then you can meet and exchange money and weapon... on your merry way :D

That's long guns only. Does not apply to handguns (unless it's black powder of course, or an antique).
