Now that the Bersa Thunder is off-roster, what's everyone's thoughts about a suitable alternative?

firestorm 380 is on the roster.

It depends why you'd want the Bersa. If you like the look, other options are the Sig P232 or the PPK series. And the Bersa is a copy of the PPK, though by most accounts it's more reliable with less slide bit.

If you want a small and reliable gun, that sometimes works for pocket carry, there are many many options, in both .380 and, now, 9mm. Ruger LCP and LC9, M&P Shield, several different Kahrs, Sig P238 and 938, for starters.

The Bersa is a nice combo of low cost, light weight, reasonable firepower (if you don't mind .380) and good looks. There aren't many guns of comparable reliability and quality going for $300 new. Maybe it will get sorted and they'll get back on the roster.

So they let it expire. Why ? Why not simply re-register it ? I am have been waiting for the $$ to get one, and now, tough noogies.

According to another thread, it isn't a situation where Bersa allowed it to expire, as sometimes happens. Instead, apparently, the DOJ de-registered it because Bersa added a "safety key" feature that in the DOJ's eyes makes it a new gun that needs to go through testing all over again, and the Bersa Thunder lacks features needed to pass the test as a new model (as opposed to one grandfathered in).

I don't know for sure that that's true - but if it is, it seems a bit nuts even for California.
