Update, I couldn't help it, it's small and it is all steel... scroll down to post 39

I keep thinning out the herd due to lack of storage space and then I see a 1911 I should probably have. I know a lot of 1911 fans hate on 9mm in a 1911 but ammo is a lot cheaper, even if you reload. Then again us older guys often have to deal with arthritis and past injuries so the 9mm has another plus going for it. Anyway I just got this 9mm STI Spartan that another calgunner did the SSE on so how could I pass it up? I was at the range shooting it this morning and was telling a friend how there is really only one more 1911 I would like to have. Another shooter overheard me and said he is selling an early Series 70 that has been massaged nicely. I shot it and after I buy that one I will only buy one more 1911 and then I'll stop!

Looks great! Fiber Optic Fronts I see, what Rear sights are you rocking?

Random suggestion but if your into Knives, I would look into a Cold Steel Spartan to go with that STI. =P

LPA adjustable rear sight.

Thanks for suggesting the Cold Steel Spartan knife! I did a quick search and read some reviews. I bought one and can't believe I never saw one before. I almost always carry more than one knife and this one looks like a primary! Two is one, one is none.

Nice...When have have said "Just one more 1911" for the 40th time you might be getting close to meaning it. :D

As for the "a 9mm 1911 is not a real 1911" types, you should just save some pity for them, they will never know.

45acp, 9mm, 10mm, 38super, 38mid-range, .40, 9x23, dillion 9x25...heck even SIG .357 are all fun to shoot in a 1911 platform.

I like the 9mm 1911's also; lot of fun for range shooting and such light recoil and muzzleblast. Great introduction to 1911 pistol.

The original Colt Commander was designed as a 9mm as part of a possible military contract, so the "real 1911's are in .45acp" cries fall on deaf ears to me.

Commanders came out in 1951; I have a 1952 in 9mm. I also have a Kimber Target II and Colt Elite IX Gold Cup chamberred in the same round.

Lol your welcome, surprised you bought one! It's a awesome Knife for sure.

Wait until you get to hold it, the handle/Grip is fantastic bar none, and the Blade is way too sexy. I got to check out my friend's Spartan last night, I was sold immediately. Looks way intimidating, made my Recon 1 look wimpy!

One more AK, One more 1911, yea, sure you'll stop about five years after you die.

Bob,
You do realize that you don't have to "BUY" 1911s. You can build them from raw forgings, 60% frames, 80% frames, raw billet stock, etc. Haha, now you're in trouble. I see a mini mill in your future!!!!!

9mm 1911 hate? I can't find a Colt 9mm for anything. Someone is not hating theirs enough.

Are you kidding, I am dying for a 9mm 1911, I think that is about the coolest idea out there. I already have a .45 ACP 1911-A1, why not one in 9mm?

Yeah I wanted a 9mm RIA Tactical for my first 1911, but it's not on the roster and I didn't want to pay for SSE and have to wait longer to get it, so I got the .45acp version.

I'm starting to get very worried that I've contracted an illness for which there is no known cure....:43:

The term "dependence" includes such symptoms as:

-"drug" taking in larger amounts than intended
-inability to cut down on "drug" use
-a great deal of time spent in activities necessary to obtain the "drug" (why am I on calguns again?)
-continued use despite knowledge of health or social problems caused by the "drug" (Is your spouse pissed off that you spend so much time cleaning your 1911s, going to the range, and lurking on calguns at ungodly times of night? Eh, she'll probably get over it.)

In short OP, you need some help.

Glad I'm not the only one that sees it like this. It's funny whenever I hear someone says something along the lines of "JMB NEVER DESIGNED IT AS BLAH BLAH BLAH" and then they're sporting a 1911 with modern iron sights, a 2lb trigger, and who knows what else going on around the MSH + Beavertail.

Man, you guys are brutal. You really think I have a problem?:D I've sold off all the guns I don't shoot. I grew up with revolvers and 1911s. I had to have all the SA/DA semi autos as they started showing up way back when. Now most of those are just a novelty to me. My purpose driven non 1911 pistols are a couple of Glocks and a Sig 239 .40 that are great for what they are. When it's time for enjoyable shooting at the indoor range its government size or long slide 1911 time baby!

I just picked up my 15th 1911 (Nighthawk GRP Recon) this Friday and I'm still not sure when I'll stop. I have 2 9mm 1911s and they're great to shoot. My favorite is still my very rare and hard to find Springfield loaded in 40 SW. My avatar only show 11, but that was last year's photo. Since then, I added a Les Baer TRS, Caspian Arms lightweight officer, the SA 40 SW, and the Nighthawk.

The suggestion to get a Cold Steel Spartan pocket knife to go with this Spartan V 1911 sounded like all the encouragement I needed to get another knife. It is one big honkin knife. It had a thumb stud for opening but my hand isn't big enough to use it. The first time I pulled the knife out of my pocket the thumb stud hung up on my pocket and opened the blade. It cuts flesh very well. I removed the thumb stud.

I'm down to seventeen 1911's; I feel like I'm going through withdrawals. I gave two away to close family members so they can enjoy them while I'm still around to shoot with them.

The irony in all this is, a 9mm 1911 generally generate just as much recoil as a 45. If you want a soft shooting 9mm or 45, develop a minimal charge of fast powder behind a heavy bullet.

I won't argue the point because I don't know what I'm talking about but that sounds strange. A 115 grain 9mm bullet versus a .45acp 200 or 230 grain bullet?

I would disagree with Press Check, I have 2 9mm 1911s, and they both shoot much softer than any of my .45 1911s.

Obviously, you can reduce felt recoil in a particular load by downloading if you're willing to tune recoil springs for only that load, but the .45acp is going to have more recoil in any practical comparable load. But don't take my word for it, go to handloads.com and use their recoil calculator. http://handloads.com/calc/recoil.asp

147 grain 9mm vs 230 grain .45acp comparison
Velocity in fps (I used 945 for 147 gr and 830 for 230 grain i.e. standard not plus P loads)
Powder charge in grains ( I used 3.5 vs 5 grains of Bullseye)
Weight of Firearm 2.375 lbs (38 ounce Kimber Target II 9mm)

Recoil Impulse in (lbs sec) .68 (147gr 9mm) .94 (230 gr .45acp)
Velocity of recoiling firearm (fps) 9.20 versus 12.69
Free Recoil Energy in (ft/lbs) 3.12 versus 5.93

If I drop the velocities dramatically for powder puff loads, say 845 fps for the 9mm and 700 fps for the .45acp the .45 acp still generates significantly more recoil:

Recoil Impulse in (lbs sec) .61 (147gr 9mm) .80 (230 gr .45acp)
Velocity of recoiling firearm (fps) 8.31 versus 10.89
Free Recoil Energy in (ft/lbs) 2.55 versus 4.37

I keep saying the same thing but it never works out for me. My problem is that my first handgun was a 1911 so nothing else ever compared to it. Why buy anything else? :D

I couldn't help myself, I marvel at .45acp 1911s in small packages. It's all steel and ported no less, not to mention a 10 round mag! I haven't shot it yet but it is a Springfield Armory and I guess I can always send it to them if they are still willing to work on discontinued pistols. Oh well, after this only one more 1911...
