Hey Guys,

I'm interested in buying my first hand gun, but would like to shoot and become more familiar with what's out there. I'm in Oakland/San Leandro. I know about Target Masters located in Milpitas, but does anyone know any place that's closer?

Also, is it true ranges will not lend you a gun to shoot at their range if you do not own one?

Thanks a lot!

target masters will rent you one if you bring a friend.

From the ranges I frequent, you must either bring in a gun of any sort, or a friend along in order to rent one of there pistols - there must have been someone who rented in the past and took their own life - bringing in a rifle shows you could have done it already... Bringing a friend decreases the probability of doing that in front of someone you know. You can go to Reeds off 101. Great guys, lots of pistols to choose from, but the SE rules apply...

Jackson arms in SSF and Bullseye in San Raphael. Most all ranges require you bring a friend or your own gun to rent nowadays.

Reeds in Santa Clara has rentals. You may want to check and see if they will apply the rental to the purchase price.

Targetmasters is a zoo most days, just FYI. The owner (Bill Heskett) is notorious for "blame Obama" price gouging on firearm sales. They (used to) have reasonable prices, I personally w

Bill is the owner? What ? I've talked to him all this time, and he never mentioned it. He's pretty cool even after I scared the beejus of some people when I "rapid" fired my shotgun accidentally.

Yes, Reeds has the Try & Buy program. If you buy what you rented, they apply a $25 discount. I purchased a Sig SP2022 for $374.99 and a Ruger Mark III 22/45 for $275 with that discount. They also advertise 1 hour free lane rental with the purchase. I haven't taken them up on that yet as I keep forgetting my receipt! They're both listed on the website.

Reeds has a very good selection of rentals, including 2 Les Baers if I remember correctly. They also have a very good selection of guns for purchase too. They have their demo models that they take out of the case. Once you decide on the pistol, they go in the back and get a brand new one so you know it's fresh from the factory. They even have you inspect it and make sure it's in perfect shape before they sell it to you. Great service!!!

I like Bullseye in San Rafael. Helpful folk. Feels like you're NOT in Marin....

I realize Vacaville is a bit of a drive from Oakland area, but there are 2 ranges here, Center Mass and Guns Fishing and Other stuff which both have lots of guns for rent, no restrictions. You just have to buy their ammo to shoot and pay range time.

I was at Jackson Arms last friday. Tons of walk-ins for rentals. They were buying up boxes of ammo. So, yeah I can see their inventory sold out. I was with a friend of mine, SFPD S.W.A.T. member, there was a point where the group on the next lane was asking us if we were selling some ammo.

Just a FYI, Jackson arms doesn't have many different guns to rent.
