Hello Gentlemen and Ladies,

A few of my buddies that I am stationed with here in Twenty Nine Palms (the stumps) told me about this site.

About me, Active duty U.S. Marine for a little more than 18 months now.
Looking for some good advise and direction from you.

Question-

I am looking to imrove my skills. Get out to a range, about every two weeks or so.
I like the AR-15 platform, mainly because its like my M16A4 Service Rifle. But my goal is to gradually take the initiative to learn how to shoot 800-1200 yards (A three + yrs goal)

I have taken a look at the Remington 700, Modern M14/MA1, AR-15 and AR-10.

I do lean/like the M14.

Can anyone here offer me some advise?

Thank you
LCpl Kutches

Welcome! With all those choices my head would be spinning too... I love my AR but I'm still trying to hit 100 yards! Check out the centerfire rifle section, years of reading there..

Welcome aboard Marine.

I would say the Remington has more after market parts to allow you to improve as you move along. Are you thinking of getting the class at Pendleton?

It has been a very long time since I worked at the stumps I was DOD in Barstow Logistics Base and we shot repaired 105's at the stumps. Don't they have a sportsmans club and range at the stumps? Look up US Tactical Supply they provide a lot of the log books and slope dope meters etc. to the class at Pendleton.

I don't have any contacts at the stumps anymore but I can put you in touch with a QA inspector in Barstow he is retired Marine and pretty knowledgeable.

Keep safe and when you ship out get some.

Bill

Welcome to the club leathernuts! I fought this same battle when it came to long range shooting with .308. I opted for an AR10 simply because I like the idea of faster follow up shots without having to rack the bolt.

Btw, if you want to reach out with the AR platform look into this thread for a service rifle that gets you to 800 easy.
