Hi everyone,

I'm new to handguns in California so I decided to get my HSC (took that today and passed) and also sign up for the defensive handgun I class from ITTS for "basic training". I've also applied for my C&R FFL. I grew up around guns and lot's of them in Illinois but Cali is a totally different story. My dad wants to send me a Walther PPK that he picked up at a gunshow. I've heard the best way to get this handgun back to Cali is to basically fly back commercially and bring it back instead of sending through an FFL. I told dad not to send it of course and I would look at a way to get it into California legally. Any thoughts on this?

ps I'm very glad I found this forum! It's been great on getting me information and building my enthusiasm for handguns.

Welcome! Search "intrafamilial transfer ". You must use an FFL in CA to get it legally. If it is coming from your parent it does not have to be on the roster, you just need to find a local gun store that understands and will do the transfer properly.

Happy Shooting!

Hi everyone
Welcome.

Due to Federal laws that have been in effect since 1968, in order for your dad to legally transfer a firearm to you, it must be transferred through a CA FFL dealer.

Federal laws prohibits the transfer of firearms between residents of different states, unless the firearm is transferred through a FFL dealer in the recipiant's state of residence.
There is no gift exemption to these Federal laws.
