View Full Version : Look what I killed today...

This burrowing bastard has been attacking my aviary wire lined, raised bed garden for a while now. After failing at both massive gas attacks and poison pellets, I took the sniper route.

Glassing with 8x Nikons made seeing the slightest earth movement easy, but it wasnít until today that I actually caught him in the act.

After seeing a bit of surface soil pulse, I put down the binoculars, shouldered by Russian TOZ-78 .22lr loaded with 60 grain Aguila SSS, and took my shot. The soil ceased moving. One shot, one kill.

Now to see if he has any friends....

Man I wish I could shoot all the gophers I got. :( Best I can do is flush them out with water and stab away.

I caught a mole that was tearing up my lawn once.
Them things are meaner then hell.

As a treat I let my dogs have a go at it.
Then put him away in the dumpster.

At what range?

I'd say about 20 feet at about a 45 degree angle down. I was lucky, it was the near side of the bed to my position. Not much of a shot to be bragging about if you can see your target, but with open sites and the critter covered by earth, Iím proudern**** of my shot :D

I catch em by just sticking my hand in the ground where they are, moles are basically helpless minus their claws. Then toss him in your neighbor's yard, that's what I do.

Hell no. I won't even let my cat and dog play with it given how much poison I’ve dumped into its tunnel. I don’t think it ate much if any of it, but better safe than sorry.

Plus, while mole might be a great mexican sauce, I doubt mole meat would taste nearly as good. :D

great job. i hate gophers. i had the same problem. these suckers were eating up my lawn. i tried the gas route, poison pellet route, and the trap route but nothing seemed to work. so i finnally got fed up and stuck a garden hose and filled the tunnel up with water for a half a day. i think the little sucker drowned. i havent had anymore problems with gophers again.. i wish that i could shoot the sucker with my ruger 10/22 but knowing my luck id probably get arrested for discharging a firearm in public....

So, that TOZ certainly did he trick for you, in getting that little guy deader than snot. How do you like that little Russian .22? It's on my short list of .22's that I'm considering.

Boy! This remindes me of the Clancy novel where the sniper "gut" shoots a terrorist. Great shot and keep it up, I've almost broken ankles due to little devils like this guy beside their usual damages.

My cats do a decent job of getting them. Haven't seen them in a couple years.

A good buddy of mines wife borrowed the pellet gun for a week and got 3 of them in Livermore a few years back. Those Navy girls are sure different.:D

Nice shootin you should be proud, open sights are a real test to your steadiness.

I really like it. It was inexpensive, yet has very few plastic parts (magazine). It is pretty damn accurate, even coming from the factory perfectly sighted in. It is nice and lightweight with a good balance. The best part is the trigger: in order to get a trigger this good on other guns, some people pay more for the trigger alone than I did for the whole rifle. Iím also a big fan of interesting firearm engineering and think the TOZ is up there with the K31 for cool action designs. :D

I like my little Russian peasant rifle, even if the checkering looks like it was done by a drunk beaver. :p

Moles eat grubs. Kill the grubs, the moles won't come around.

I think this one was after my red worms. Supposedly, they donít eat much plant matter, but I have two dead and a couple dying plants that would dispute that. One of the dead ones had half its stem stripped clean below ground, cutting off the water supply to its leaves. The other dead one's root ball was nonexistent. Before the hunt began, I had the entire bed covered with straw, so I wouldnít have noticed the bugger was even there had plants not started dying.

But today, I got to wake up to a garden bed unblemished by tunnels. Happy day, happy day!
