Hey guys,
I'm new from Northern California (Sierra Foothills). I have always wanted to buy a CA legal assault rifle, but have been putting it off due to cost. With this latest election (which I was very involved in, volunteering to help out local pro-gun candidates), I feel I really should not wait much longer. My current home defense weapon is a Stoeger coach gun (12 gauge), but now I want to buy a centerfire rifle.

I'm really torn on what to purchase. We have a serious bear problem here. My neighbor, who owns a vineyard/orchard, trapped a 500 pound male, and I have personal experience with a mother and four cubs climbing onto my front porch (I pepper-sprayed her and she never came back). I like the .223/5.56 AR platform because it's so common and available, but I'm not sure it has the stopping power I would need against a 500 pound black bear. I really like the .308 cartridge for stopping power, but want it in a bullet-button removable magazine type. I've looked at Atlantic Firearms and seen several FAL and G3 type guns that fit most of my requirements, but I would like rails to accommodate a tactical light (most of my encounters are at night).

I have no line of site to my neighbors, and live alone, so I'm not too worried about a shot passing through walls. My budget is around $1500 (negotiable up to $2000). Can anybody recommend a rifle to me? I've been shooting on and off my whole life, but I've never cared about being sub 1.0 MOA, I just need a solid rifle that will do the job. I love the STEYR AUG and the MSAR STG-556, but do I need a larger caliber for potential bear-defense?

Thanks!

I'm in NorCal, Sierra Foothills. "A pill from the Hills". Live in a part of my county that is Unincorporated, I shoot out my back door. My neighbors shoot; big caliber (big mags) and Tannerite at midnight, when I'm trying to sleep. Gheez.

You might want to hang out in the Centerfire Rifles Forum to get answers.

Me: I would love to have an AR in .308 with a bull barrel.

We have Bear and Big Cats here, as well as the 2 legged snakes.

Welcome to Calguns. A little housekeeping first. An assault rifle has select fire capabilities so not much of a chance you will be able to own one of those in CA. Assault weapon is a made up term which describes rifles that looked scary to our esteemed legislators so they banned new ownership of them, it was for the children. As usual the legislation wasn't up to snuff since it was drafted on an emotional basis, not an intellectual one, so the bullet button was designed to allow us common folks to own these rifles and still comply with CA laws.

They do make an AR rifle in .308 but I do not know how effective they would be against a bear. I encourage you to contact your local Fish & Game office to make sure you do not run afoul of laws protecting wildlife. That being said, if it came down to a bear or me, I think I might want to have a 12 GA loaded with slugs. You could also carry 00 buck and birdshot rounds with you to cover most any problem you might encounter.

build a AR10 in a CQ configuration. im assuming you are not hunting bear so a long barrel and high powered scope wont be needed.
Your local gun store should be able to help try TJ Norths in down town marysville

Welcome to CalGuns. You're going to find many many opinions here. My opinion is that every American male should have:

An AR-15
An AK either a 74 or a 47
An M1 Garand
A 12 Gauge shotgun
A Ruger 10-22
A Glock in 9mm
And
A 1911 in .45ACP

In your case I suggest building an AR and buying a CMP M1 Garand.

Welcome. An AR is a fun gun to shoot. For Bear and Home Defense, I would prefer to use my 16" Saiga in 7.62x39 (or .308 if you can find one at a decent price). At short range, you don't have to worry about 1 MOA accuracy and you want a hard hitting bullet that will penetrate the hide of the bear. You want something that is easy to point, shoot and control. The Saiga is not as sexy as an AR (I have one of those also), but it is perfect for what it's roots (AK-47) was designed to do. A couple of 10 round magazines are all you need for HD against bears. It's an easy to carry fast pointing reliable gun.

With your budget, you can probably buy a Saiga and build an AR to your liking. If you know how to put together a computer, hook up a home stereo system, or are at all handy with tools around the house, you can build an AR. In the mean time your coach gun with 000 or 00 buck will do the job, but it would not be a fun gun to practice with.
