View Full Version : Saiga .223 - Worth getting?

I already have an SKS and three AK builds in progress, so I think I have enough 7.62x39mm rifles to keep me going for the meantime.

I've considered a Saiga for a while, but I am considering the .223 version (I know someone will tell me to get the .308, but the ammo is just too expensive to plink with at the moment), so is the .223 a worthwhile purchase? ie. Does it function reliable / accurately chambered for .223?

I'm assuming the Saiga was built to shoot the cheaper steel cased .223 made by Wolf, Brown Bear, etc which would make it cheaper to shoot than my AR (which I will only shoot brass cased .223 through).

According to the Izhmash website, the 7.62x39mm and the .223 versions are available with 20.8", 22.2" and 16.6" barrels. I have only ever seen the 16.6" version here, are either of the longer barrelled versions available in the U.S?

Finally, will Classic Arms ship Saigas to CA?

Somehow, I don't think I'll bother with the Izhmash cars though! :p

I have the 7.62x39 and .223 versions and would have the .308 version soon. I love RAA Saigas... Pretty reliable and fairly accurate. In my opinion though, it appears that the .223 is a bit more accurate than 7.62x39. I have been using the AEs on the .223 and it feeds really well. I have yet to try a Wolf ammo through it but from what I have heard, it should be alright.

If Korea ever attacks, Ima go to "The Professional"'s house!

I want a .308 myself. But I think the .223 is worth the money.

For $260 or so - always go bang - I think they are great. Not an AR but you could almost buy 3 for the price of one AR. No flames please I think ARs are great but each weapon has it's place. Plus they ARE black so they have that going for them. Guys on the Saiga-12.com board claim 2" MOA and also seem to agree that the shorter barrel is more accurate (which I was a little surprised by but they say less barrel whip with the shorter barrel).

If you order online check DDs Ranch - good prices and they can usually tell you an FFL near you that they have shipped to before. Ammo Bros in Cerritos used to have them but prices were higher since they essentially buy them retail last I heard but they are good guys - check them out if you are SoCal.

Thanks for the info. It's interesting to hear owners have had better results with the 16.6" barrel.

I was actually planning to do my transfer through Ammo Bros, as thy're only 7-8 miles from me.

Ernesto - Wow!

If your getting a Saiga, why not get a 308 instead?

.308 ammo is a little pricy at the moment, and surplus stuff is very thin on the ground, unless you don't mind shooting the Indian / Pakistani made stuff, which I hear is terrible - different grn bullets and powder in the same batch, etc.

Besides, I have a FAL I'm slowly putting together to get my .308 fix.

Would you happen to have instructions for the "simple mod"? I am planning to get one....

Thx!
