Is it legal to make black powder???

I searched but could not find a thread that dealt with this and am not sure if I am missing something in the health or penal code. Is there any law against making your own black powder provided that you stay within the legal storage limits and all of that? I am just talking about the legality of making it. Thanks

That's a good question.... I used to, ahem, know somebody who made their own black powder out of sulfur, salt peter, and charcoal..... :43:

Back in my college days, I kept hassling one of the guys who worked in an aluminum foundry to get me some dust so that I could make some thermite. Although he was interested in the project, he just never got around to it...

I made gunpowder from a recipe I took out of a Funk and Wagnals Encyclopedia. I used my moms garden sulfer,crunched up some charcoal briquettes and bought the potassium nitrate at Longs Drugs. Made enough to fill up a large glass coffee jar and it made great firecrackers. :D

I mix rocket fuel compositions as such:
70% Ammonium Perchlorate
12% Aluminium (800+ mesh)
8% Iron 3 Oxide
mix in ball mill for 36 hours
add
10% Polymer Binder

to change the fuel/catalyst mixture would result in the creation of a flash powder or 'HE'

none of the chemicals used to create any explosives/propellants are illegal to own

How sure are you? Can you show me the law? The reason I want to know, is because I use a lot of black powder for my reenactments. The group that I belong to only allows us to use actual black powder not Pyrodex or anything like that. I can only have 1 pound at a time and that doesn’t last me all that long. It would be much easier to just make my own as I need it. I priced out the ingredients and I can get enough to make about 100 pounds for the cost of buying one pound.

Oh, I didn’t see what you had before you edited it. When I was a kid, we used to fill tennis balls with strike anywhere match heads and throw them. The match heads would go off and either blow the tennis ball apart or if the hole was too big, they would squirt out and look like a pinwheel.
