A couple months ago my father, best friend and I took our hunters education class and relieved our certification. My dad has been going out with his friends hunting for small game and some big but I haven't had time to go with him so my buddy and I are trying to plan something. We both got our licenses and tags for deer in D13 so we want to go and look for some buck, can anyone give me some advice or tips that would be helpful and greatly appreciated!

Ok, Young Gun, you didn't say which direction you would be coming from to get to D13 or maybe you live there. So, I'll just let you figure it out based on my suggestion. Do you have a National Forrest Pass to hang in the window? Don't forget that. If you are coming up or down the 5 Freeway, when you get to the Los Padres National Forrest (LPNF) right around Gorman, which is the Eastern area of D13, there is a State road that goes West over to the 33 which is the Western border of the D13 zone. I don't remember the State Highway number or the road name, but I think it's the only one and easy to find on a map. There is a Mc Donald's and I think a Chevron station on the North bound side of the 5 that will help you identify the right exit. There is a bridge to the West side from there too.
If you are coming in the LPNF from the Western side of D13, then, take the State Highway 33 North from Ojai. When you get up over and down the road from Pine Mountain (which is also a good place for deer; and there are campgounds there up on top of it) you will hit the flats and there is a Ranger Station right at the corner of the 33 and that State Highway I can't remember the number of. So, if you make a right it goes all the way back to Gorman. If you ride in, I'd say, half way down that Highway, maybe, you will start to see off shoots on the South side of that road, and there are lots of places to explore for good deer between that road and the mountains that will be in front of you. Ah, good for bear and lions too, so when you hunt remember to turn around and look behind you every few steps. It's probably still warm enough for rattlers and torantulas, too. That area just went through a forrest fire a few years back, so I liked the open firing lanes I found all over the place when I was up there. Ten cents, please!

I forgot to mention that but I am driving up 5 north from San Fernando/Valencia area. The areas that I do know about for D13 is by exiting smokey beat and driving straight through Gorman then driving towards Frazier area or going all the way up passim Gorman exit and takin Frazier park exit. Those are the areas that I do know. As far as the forest pass that I do not have, I usually drive all the way up to where miller jeep trail ends and park at the camp sites up there. Is that the area?

You are on the right track. You only have 1 weekend left, so stick with what you know. Miller Jeep Trail is good.

Can I shoot around the trail? It's mostly for off road vehicles so I don't know if that would be considered a road? Can't shoot near a road but it technically isn't a road?

Thats not a road, thats a trail. new regulations state that the forest adventure pass is only needed in improved areas ie..toilet, campground, drinking fountain. If you just stop on the side of the road and go hiking there is no pass needed anymore. Even in the past if you didnt pay the ticket nothing happened (at least to me ).

"In a decision that could bring an end to the national Adventure Pass program, the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the U.S. Forest Service cannot charge for hiking, walking, picnicking or visiting undeveloped areas of national forest land."

This notion that you can't shoot near a road is FUD. You're legal if you step one foot off the road.

Well guys just an update, we ended up going to the frazier park area and saw about 10 deer. All of them but one were female. The one male we did see was too young to take. Thanks again for the tips. Now that deer season is ending it's gonna be time to hunt pigs.
