I saw this article today and I thought I'd share. Pretty cool if you're wealthy enough to afford one. :D

the design features a Faraday cage (to shield electronics from EMP), filters for nuclear, biological and chemical threats, a water desalinization system, water purification and multiple ways to generate electricity, including solar panels.

Its engine is designed to run on a variety of fuels, as is its primary generator. There’s ample storage, and by DeLozier’s calculations a family in a fully stocked Survivor Truck could live off the grid for up to two years. If dad has special forces training, that window could probably be pushed out even further.

To that end, the truck and its accessories are bulletproof, and it comes stocked with gas masks, chemical suits, night vision equipment and camouflage netting that provides 360-degrees of virtual invisibility around the truck. If you believe the best defense is a good offense, the roof is meant to serve as a sniper platform, though you need to provide your own Barrett .50 caliber.

An alternative is by GXV Overland.

I've looked at the old military blazers and stuff on craigslist but it is mostly out of curiosity. I can't justify a vehicle that I will most likely never drive.

If I win the lottery, I would get a standard luxury SUV (like a new 4x4 Tahoe) and get it bulletproofed. It wouldn't stand out too much and would be nice to have.

I saw a Discovery show (or perhaps on Speed?) about a company that did bulletproofing to armored vehicles. I think it was these guys: http://www.texasarmoring.com/armored_suvs.html
Costs anywhere from $55k to 500k depending on what you get and the vehicle. Pretty cool stuff.

Of course, there's the whole 'win the lottery' hurdle to get past first....

Nah, the don't float when half full of water no matter what the dealer tells you.

And the body work scratches so easily.

I loved that movie when I was a kid!

Ha! There was a place right off the 101 freeway in Hollywood that had that thing parked until about 5 or 6 years ago. I grew up across the freeway from it a d always told myself I would buy it when I was older but someone beat me to it :(

I'd still rather have an M-ATV or a Casspir.

My only concern over these large vehicles is the maintence and replacement parts. With some of the newer vehicles/more specialized vehicles that is a major concern. With the duece and a half they are common enough and the vehicle system is simple enough it is much less of a concern. They are also a multi-fuel vehicle that can run off of many alternate fuels. You can drain the oil out of stalled and stranded vehicles and still be driving down the road.

I have my wife about 50% on board to add a duece to our fleet. I want a converted crew cab with a box bed, 100+ gallon fuel tank, whistler C motor and a M105 and you have a vehicle capable of going nearly anywhere you could imagine.

I've driven by that lot at least a hundred times and wondered if he had a website! Really glad you posted that!

The "James Bond" feature I'd want is for it to mimic a fatal engine breakdown if started without authorization.

Mimic a full head gasket blow out w/related electrical cluster-phuque. Steam, high temp readings, lost of power then some plastic burning in big cluster of wires followed by electrical backout.

I'd PLAN on someone getting the drop on me and stealing my rig, but I want them to abandon it shorty and not even try to "fix" anything.

Of course it would have a couple different radio beacons and maybe even launch a flare at midnight 3 days after being stolen in case I'm not close.
