I saw it too, they were showing a footage with an AR-15 doing tactical rifle with one of those mag clamp setups. I think they're airing it whenever that Brian Williams fellow does his news segment in the evening.

Tonight at 5:30pm on NBC.

The promo is about a mom and how her Semi-Auto rilfes help her "relax" from the office and why some people want to ban the weapons. They show her running through some targets in the promo.

I set it up on the DVR.

Any chance you can make this available after your DVR grabs it?
I mostly gave up TV 8 years ago and only watch on the web now.

Yea I saw a clip of it last night. Showed lady (wearing pink outfit, IIRC) shooting an AR in a tactical match (multi gun match/ 3-gun?). Had some IPSC targets painted, behind a barricade type wall (ply-wood) with window.

She was shooting pretty good and fast. She definitely knew what she was doing.

Yeah, I hate that "the pistol grip makes it more dangerous because you can shoot from the hip crap". Just once I would like someone to counter that and ask the reporter if they would prefer to stand 100 yards down range and have someone shoot from the hip or aim from the shoulder. I wonder which they would choose

Overall I thought it was a pretty good story though - nice that they presented someone that seems very level-headed rather than a soldier of fortune or gang-banger type. The more awareness of "black rifles" in the context of lawful usage the better.

Why do people think it is easier to "spray from the hip" with a pistol grip? I must have unflexible joints or something, but it is a pain in my wrist to try and spray from the hip whilst grasping the grip. A standard rifle stock like a Mini-14 is a lot easier to "spray."

That's just a knee jerk response people who have handled guns have. I talk to a lot of people from foreign countries online, and whenever I mention that I'm a gunsmith they usually go off into some anti gun rant and of course the first question is always do you think assault rifles should be legal blah blah blah. The pistol grip used for shooting from the hip ALWAYS comes up, and I've got a stock response, "grab a cordless drill, hold it like a gun from the hip, now grab a broom and hold it like a gun from the hip, what's more comfortable?" Always shuts em up and I've even managed to convince a few that there is a TON of misinformation on guns out there.

i have to say, i own lots of weapons and newsflash... it is easier to shoot from the hip with a pistol grip! hell with a pistol grip it is easier to shoot period. Even from the shoulders. Why do you guys think all modern assualt weapons have pistol grips?

and yes I did say "assualt" weapons. Why play symantecs? My weapon is anything I want to call it. Assualt weapon, peace weapon, gansta killer, cop killer... etc, call my weapon whatever verb you want.

bottom line is i have never committed crime or killed anyone with my so called assualt weapon. America was founded on the right to protect ourselves, and bygoneit I believe in that right. Basically the first 2 ammendments is this:

1) right to say whatever the hell you want
2) right to protect yourself in case you pissed off somebody enough to want to kill you when you used #1 above

Speaking of M16's, I had the opportunity to inspect a CHP issued M16 up close the other day. It was a 1967 era issue, probably saw duty in Vietnam, appeared bone stock except it had been neutered rendering the full auto option non-workingi. Only semi and safe were functional. The original M16 full hammer was still in place as well as the bolt carrier group. Pencil barrel and triangular handguards, even had the "tear drop" style forward assist. While the CHP officer was familar with the weapon I had to help him break it open to examine the internals. The barrel looked new thank god.

I asked the CHP officer why they weren't using more modern M4 style carbines, especially with shorter barrels as he had a tough time unlocking and pulling his war surplus rifle out of the cruiser. He told me the department wanted to keep a low-profile look and the M4 might raise concerns as being a full-auto machine gun. (Redding, ca)

"a pistol grip that allows firing from the hip"

WOW! watch out!!!!

I know this stuff is really mindless drivel. Have these people ever shot a gun? It is NOT easier to fire an pistol gripped AR-15 "from the hip" than a standard stock mini-14? They just keep repeating it as if it is true - or for that matter important. Wouldn't we want idiots to shoot from the hip? Isn't that the idiomatic expression we use when we mean someone is acting in haste with little aim or focus. They are more likely to miss if they shoot from the hip rather than if they AIM. Also, they made some generic statement about "black rifles" being used in crimes a lot - I'd like to see statistics on that as I had read otherwise (handguns dominate crimes but also dominate thwarting crime).

mth
07-19-2007, 11:23 PM
It may have been good that they had the (VPC?) anti-gun person talking about "spraying from the hip."

Maybe it's just hard to see past my bias as a gun owner and someone familiar with the situation, but she sounded like much more of a nutjob (in context) than the lady with the AR-15 who was presented as being a pretty normal and productive member of society. This in a world where many people think gun owners are 'crazy.' Hopefully that's what a lot of others came away with from it.

Sometimes it's good to give people a platform of speech to hang themselves with.

So I just watched the NBC news piece on "Evil Black Rifles"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnRr2oK5miA

The mother in it articulated her self in a very weird fashion. But I think she was competent and probably is the ideal kind of person that the Gun Owner community would want representing us.

She mentioned safety and sports and didn't sound crazy, and played up the women empowerment thingy.

But of course they had to mention "a pistol grip that allows firing from the hip". I didn't like that that they included all sorts of negative remarks about it but NEVER countered those negative remarks with anything from the other side.

They had some dumb broad from the VPC spew garbage and of course they pointed out the DC sniper used an AR pattern rifle. Not once did they mention the lives saved by police and citizens using them for self defense.

So there were no Pro's and all Con's. It was not impartial.

If you were intelligent, truly independent, self sufficient and could think for yourself, then this piece would be very positive. Otherwise it was just 2 minutes and 20 seconds of buzzwords and biased reporting.

I knew it was going to happen this way =(

I hated how they stressed "black rifle" over and over again like they were trying to stigmatize the word. Do most people call ar-15 rifles "black rifle".
Most people I know call them AR's.

One piece of nonsense which is a pet peeve of me: The says that "tens of thousands of black rifles" started selling after the expiration of the ban in 2004. Uh, no. The ban made absolutely no difference in the availability of AR-15s. The only difference was they had to give up flash hiders and collapsible stocks. Whatever. It's still an AR-15, still functions the same way, still looks almost the same. I have one from that period, which is now CA registered and I could get ahead and put on a flash hider but I don't want to. Like I'm scared of muzzle flash or something. I heard that threads on the end of the barrel make it slightly less accurate, and I just don't care about flash hiders.

The ban had zero impact on availability of AR-15s, the banned configurations were functionally the same as pre-ban configurations, and to claim that the ban stopped sales of any of these rifles is absurd.

Did you catch that left handed AR15 (left eject & left forward assist.) in the video @ 57 seconds?

I highly, highly doubt it was actually a left-handed AR. It was probably the art director for the piece saying "the video needs more action on the right. Let's mirror this clip."

The conspiracy theorist in me would say they've learned their lesson, thanks to the OLL situation. They can't ban "AR and AK series", so they will first entrench the idea of the "black rifle" in the public consciousness, then seek to ban BIG PRINT "Black Rifles" SMALL PRINT "any semi-automatic rifle with a pistol grip and a detachable magazine or a magazine protruding conspicuously from the body."

As long as the gun manufacturers don't do something stupid like shying away from the color black, it would just backfire ;) on the gun grabbers. However, if the gun manufacturers pull a Ruger and try to appease the gun grabbers to keep their stuff from being affected -- say they switched their entire line to wood, fake wood, and "hunter's camo" instead of "military camo" and black/dark gray, then the meme that nobody needs an evil black rifle might actually stick.

I think we just need to continue using *our* term "evil black rifle", with emphasis on the "eeeeevil", and the ridiculousness of the situation will be obvious to all. Humor trumps fear, and fear is the only thing the gun grabbers have going for them.

That rifle is a Stag Arms lefty. Look at the lower receiver. The safety and bolt open are on the right side. If it were a mirror image, the mag catch would be visible.

Definitely a left handed Stag upper on a standard lower. If it had been mirrored there would have been a mag release button below the ejection port unstead of a mag catch arm.

The math adds up: (1) Stag makes left hand uppers + (1) Scenes were shot at Stag Arms = (2) it was an actual left-handed AR.

Possibly just a ratings thing. They got all of you to watch didnt they?

The news media is almost always anti-gun, the sensationalism of it all makes for more viewers thus more money. Plus a lot of reporters are either too lazy to get their facts straight or just want their opinion aired (did I mention they are almost always anti-gun?).

Unfortunately, a large percentage of the population does not fall into this category. Most americans sit in front of the news like little birds in a nest and the news is momma bird with a fat worm in her mouth.

No, she spoke like the typical person at the range does when they forget to remove ear plugs during a cease fire.

I thought it was fair and balanced.

I have done a ride along with CHP in the Bay Area, and the one in that cruiser was a "dissipator" style. Similar to what Sweeney pictures/describes in his AR book.

It was to scare people and probably drum up support for HR1022. Remember, Obama is now calling for a reinstatement of the AW ban, so the news people will want to help him out by doing pieces like this. They have to, by and large, because they can't cover crimes committed with AR's. Not enough material for that.

I would guess that they got them from the DoD law enforcement assistance program. The LAPD got a similar issue of M16A1s from what I was told. Did the CHP rifle have the tab that blocks the selector or was a two position selector installed?

It's news. It is almost certain the piece was developed as a response to a similar article in the New York Times last month: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/03/business/yourmoney/03rifle.html

I thought it was fair. I would have liked to see Deb say something along the lines of "Why should I be punished or my family left defenseless because some wacko's used them to commit crimes?" It would have made the piece better but probably wouldn't have passed the editor.

As it stands, it's a great step forward by the media showing that mainstream America LIKES evil black rifles regardless what the Brady's say about them.

YOU'RE WRONG! Only criminals like them! They're used for the sole purpose of spraying from the hip and killing as many babies as possible!
