My son is 6 and i was wanting to start taking him out on his own hunting escursions, versus being my bird dog LOL, but as i read the hunting regs it is leading me to believe that he will have to complete the hunters saftey course. Is ths true?

I assume you meant that you want him to be "hunter"....First, he will need to take an authorized hunter safety course ...then obtain his hunting license before he can "legally" hunt.
IMHO ...6 is a little too young..... I have taken both my kids shooting and hunting since before they could walk.....My boy (and girl) both got heir licenses around 10 years of age (both are smart and gifted) not sure it would have happened at the age of six. My son got a 98 out of 100 on his test! (A little coaching from Dad-he still tells me today he would have gotten a 100% if i hadn't helped ;O )

I took my 10 year old out for the first time this weekend. We were overseas the last 4 years or I would have started him earlier. I let him carry around my unloaded .22 to get him used to lugging a rifle around. I don't know if that would require him to have a license or not, but I am assuming since it didn't even have a clip in it I was ok...but things aren't always cut and dry here.

I just had a conversation today about mentoring a kid, and his mom wants me to take him shooting and hunting to have fun, and teach him responsibility. He is 10, so good to know other kids are passing the state test around that age.

its way doable if they do some homework......I had them get the book and start reading it a few months before the class. I was amazed at how many kids came to my sons class without supervision. there were at least ten out of a class size of 30 ish........most of them didn't pass and the instructor told them to come back next month to try again.
Until he can get a HL get him the famous red Ryder BB gun let him tag along with it and they can have a lot of fun.

Have your son take the hunter safety class and ask that he take the exam orally. He may not pass but will receive valuable safety, firearma and hunting information. All 3 of my kids joined me in the field as soon as they could walk, we then moved on to shooting when they were the right size and showed they were ready.
A few years of carrying a BB gun or a stick to show he is responsible and ready is great way to get him started.

I passed the hunter safety course at 9 years old. However, my dad started taking me along on the easier trips at about 7 and I spent a year in the duck blind with a Red Ryder. Those were good times...

All great advice, i have my son carry his BB gun when we go out hunting. It helps train him to employ proper firearm safety, and it also show him that when you are hunting you are just actually hiking with a firearm most of the time LOL.

My Daughter took the class at 10 and got 98%. I think there were a couple kids in there that were 8? There is no minimum age, so as long as he can pass the test, he can get a license. Get the study guide book and go over it with him. There is a practice test in the back, that will give you an idea if he is ready or not.
Most kids will be super excited about it and will not treat it as if it was school work. Never seen my daughter so into studying and taking a test before, probably never will again hahaha. She cant hunt right now cuz her grades suck :(
