View Full Version : How I fit an ATI stock to my 10/22

I wish I'd thought to take photos in progress, but here's the situation:

1: my 10/22 came with "hi viz" iron sights with plastic red and green inserts
2: the hole in the top of the 10/22 adjustable "tactical" stock is too small for these sights
3: I spent a lot of time looking for scope mounts that would let me use the iron sights on this rifle

So, taking the top part of the hand guard/forwards grip, I used a sharp knife to scratch away at a .75" square, then a mallet and the tip of the same knife to perforate the plastic, then scratched and tapped until it came out. I then sanded down the rough edges, coated the piece in some plastic-safe spraypaint, and installed it. Much to my surprise, everything worked out as I'd hoped.

The part I removed

Installed, with the sight fitting properly now

The rifle

The paint matches the original finish rather well...

One unexpected benefit to the new stock: my magazines now drop free cleanly!

There are a few degrees of "wiggle" in the joint where the shoulder stock mates to the hinge on the main body. I think I may put a bit of adhesive in there to tighten things up... it's not a lot, but it feels a bit annoying.
