Hey all,
Looking to get out and get a turkey for thanksgiving this fall turkey season. Anybody have any suggestions on where to go or would be willing to take a turkey newb out? Looking to harvest with my bow but if its a shotgun dig then I wouldnt be adverse to that. I have been waterfowling for a number of years and really would like to try out a turkey hunt this year. Any good info or opportunities would be greatly appreciated!

look for private land, ask around starting now in the castro valley, pleasaton, SJ, Santa clara foothills. i have private land i hunt turkeys on in the area and it payed off spending a day driving roads asking for permission. dont ask on opening day. start a month or 2 early. if its cattle land they generally dont like squirrels so if you have a .22 rifle...work something out with them. thats what i do

Is there any info on dfg's website about these areas? I just don't really have a clue where any of this stuff is.

there is no DFG areas in the bay area. I am from the east bay, your best bet is to literally go door to door on some less traveled roads and ask about turkey hunting. eventually someone will bite, i literally asked all day at 30ish ranches and got 2 people willing to let me hunt their private land

There are turkey in Knoxville WA (north of Lake BerryessA), but they get hit hard and are very easy to spook. Regardless of where you go, forget about the bow until you know the area well enough to pick your spot. Turkey can see/hear you coming from a long way off, and until you know the area really well you've got a much better chance with a shotgun.

i got excellent turkey grounds on private land, id say skip public for gobblers on WAs. its not too hard to get private closer to home for no cost

Many members don't like other members giving out specific information, even if it is public, plenty of un-spooked turkeys in this area. Develop your own hunting areas, call CDFG and ask for them to mail you the hunting package they have, it cost about 5 bucks but that was back in the olden days, call BLM and do the same. You need to know how to read topographical maps and read the CDFG Regulations like it is a new paper and go over the BLM regulations too. CDFG is in Sacto, that's not far.

There is actually.

If you go here:

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/hunting/uplandgame/

...and look for "Guide to Hunting wild Turkey in California" it may give you some more information on how to plan your hunt.

You can also go here:

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/Hunting/

...and look under "Where to go Hunting" for information on USFS, BLM, FHL, and other areas where you can hunt.
