what is the difference between a 590 and a maverick 88 with a barrel shroud and ghost rings? Anything else?

I'm not familiar with the Mav88 but the 590A1 has heavy barrel, metal trigger guard, metal safety button, bayonet lug, ghost ring, and parkerized; heat shield is not a 590A1 item.
Mossberg has different things labeled 590A1 sometimes, but those are the features that people refer to when they talk about the A1.

was wondering the same thing, haven't had a 590 or 88, I'm sure not much at all.
I've got 2 500a's and a winchester 1300, one of the 500's will be sporting a sidewinder kit and specops stock though :D

BIG 5 has the Mossberg 590 on sale right now for 319.
I first was interested in buying a 199 Charles Daly, but I read some poor reviews and decided that I could easily slap down another 100 for quality.
I looked at the Remington 870, but when I asked for the Manager's opinion, he chose Mossbergs and he told me his reasons - and I completely agreed after review.
The Mossberg felt lighter. The selling point for me was that the Mossberg's slide release was behind the trigger guard and I could easily pump it without having to shift my hands.
The Rem 870 I handled had the slide release button in the front, and I had to shift too much to pump the gun - I didn't like that.

I've jerryrigged the Mossberg heatshield onto a 590A1 - the heavy barrel makes it too wide for screwholes to properly align, so I had to do some rigging with different hex screws and JBWeld... Took spme heavy hammering with a rubber mallet to fit over the front of the barrel - the braised on front sights prevent the heatshield from "slipping" over the front... Scratched park in few places...
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/9017/heatshieldon2.jpg
Has held for 2 years now - no problem... Wouldn't do it again, but at the time, I had to have a heatshield on my Mossberg and keep a heavy barrel... If it comes apart in the future, perhaps I'll take it off again and just get a spare 590 barrel.
P.S. The parkerizing on Mossberg 590A1's is very weak and scratches off too easily - my loading tube got silver lines on it from test feeding dummy rounds almost immediately...
Added: The current configuration, I'm using SpeedFeed III stock - the SpeedFeed IV, while a good idea, does not work as well in practice and negates benefits of Mossberg design. Grip has to be changed to disengage the safety and completely changed to release action - not a problem with classic rifle buttstock... +4 shell storage is a nice addition, but little cumbersome for tactical reloads - good addition for Administrative reloads though. Make sure to fit both shells though, because when adding only 1 - they fly out with recoil - rather troublesome if using those off-size Eastern European shotshells like S&B.

Looks good. Did you buy the heatshield parkerized. How do you parkerize a gun? Is it simmilar to powder coating? I would love to do mine.
Wow I didnt realize how far back that pistol grip was on the speedfeed stock. I can reach the action tab and saftey from mine.

590A1 comes "parked" from the factory. Mossberg makes 2 types of heatshield - blued and parkerized (stainless steel maybe as well). Parkerized heatshield matches 590A1 exactly in finish - which makes me wonder if they intended it for 590A1 at some point.
Parkerizing process involves stripping the bluing to bare steel, prepping the metal and "boiling" the steel in the parkerizing solution - http://www.blindhogg.com/parkerizing.html has a step by step explanation...

I believe that metal replacement parts for the trigger guard and safety tang are available from Mossberg - the plastic parts suppose to be durable enough with the exception of extreme hot climates.

I believe you have to buy a whole new trigger assembly. Also there is no real reason to get a metal trigger guard. The plastic ones are extremely durable.

plastic is not more shock/impact resistant than steel

I was speaking of plastic parts on the Mossberg 590 that have readily available replacements - if I forgot heavy barrel, then you forgot ghostring sights :D

It's not, but it's "good enough" for the job - majority of the reported failures of both the triggerguard and the safety tang were due to exposure to extreme cold temperatures... Otherwise, the part endures. That said, though, I do prefer steel over plastic any day.

Do you guys know if the metal trigger assembly for the 590A1 is compatable with a 500A? Basicly could I pull the plastic one out of my 500 and replace it with one for a 590A1?....
