I have found a vendor who can get up to 30 AES-10B rifles within a week. I am checking with him right now on the details of how he wants us to pay. The price will be $499.00.

I will post details here as I learn more.

For those who don't know - the AES-10B is this:

EDIT: the original thread over at the CWS section has been deleted - so this thread is the new home to this group buy (for now).

Sorry if this has been discussed already, but how will these be made CA legal? Will DDs Ranch be fixing the magazines, removing the pistol grip, or will our receiving FFL do that... for a fee of course?

They have detachable magazines, so they can't even be imported into the state with the pistol grip (or the hicap magazine, for other reasons).

They are perfectly legal, as long as you do not put a pistol grip or other evil features on them. If you do put evil features on them, then you need to fix the magazine.

So it's like this:

1) no evil features = detachable magazine

OR

2) evil features (any of the following: forward pistol grip, pistol grip, collapsible stock and/or flash hider) = *must* have fixed magazine.

I will be putting a MonsterMan grip on mine. This is not a pistol grip. That way I can use my legal preban magazines.

Repeat - the seller can not ship these to California with the pistol grip attached, or with the 40 round magazine that normally comes with these.

Thanks for the quick reply. I take it DDs Ranch will be shipping the rifle without pistol grip and magazine. Easy enough. Buy my own mag, fix the mag with bullet button (there is one available for AK style rifles, right? EDIT: Found my answer after a quick search. I'll be picking one up from CWS.), and add a pistol grip. Sweet!

Went to RR to DROS the rifle and here's a quick snapshot of it.

It was covered in cosmoline (grease?) just enough. And it's heavy (to me anyways), and the bipod is skewed (no worries Dean, I'm taking it off anyways)

Here's a pic of it and on top is Bud's butt (nice dogs), one more thing that I noticed is that the buttstock is short, probably just me, co'z this is my very first AK/RPK type rifle.

Got mine!!!!

I picked it up today after the obligatory 10 day wait. It's nice. First thing I did when I got home was refinished the wood and gave the metal a coat of flat black. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the FCG is a Tapco G2!

After refinishing the wood and painting the metal, I fitted my MMG, cleaned her up, and took the below photos.

I'm going to the range on Sunday (wait, that's today!) and I will post a range report.

First impressions:

1) not as heavy as I thought (that's good)
2) the Tapco FCG was a pleasant surprise
3) the rear sight leaf is adjustable for windage (unlike an normal AK)
4) the front trunnion is one of those fat ones
5) the rifle appears to have been made by Romarms (in Romania)

:D

And can I get a for-dummies guide on refinishing the wood and painting the metal? :helpsmilie: :D

oaklander
07-29-2007, 12:37 AM
Yes!

You will need the following:

1) some carburator cleaner (spray can) & orange citrus-based paint stripper (spray can)
2) some reddish stain
3) something to go over the stain (like Minwax Wood-Sheen)
4) high-temp flat black paint
5) some sandpaper & masking tape & paper towels
6) some green scouring pads
7) newspaper
8) some time

-------------------

1) dissasemble the rifle - no need to take out the FCG - just take off the top cover, etc. op-rod, and handguards. You won't be able to remove the butt-stock (I wasn't).

2) remove the gas tube from the front handguard - you have to twist it 180 degrees to do this - it's easier than it sounds.

3) put down some newspaper and spray the carb cleaner on the metal parts of the gun, and anything else you want to paint

4) then apply the paint stripper to the wood parts - wait a while then use the green pad to scrub off the old wood finish - then rinse with water & let dry.

5) use the flat black paint to paint the metal parts of the gun (barrel, rec., bipod, etc.) make sure you mask the buttstock (since it's still attached to the rifle). Make sure you flip up and mask the rear sight leaf, since it's got some nice white paint markings on it - you don't want to paint over those.

6) once the black paint has dried, use some low-tack masking tape and cover the back of the receiver by the buttstock - then sand the buttstock & the other wood parts you removed. Sand 'em good!

7) Apply the reddish stain to the wood parts using a paper towel. Wipe off excess.

8) Once the reddish stain is dry - coat it with Minwax Wood-Sheen, or boiled linseed oil, or urethane (whatever you like). Add additional coats to taste.

9) clean the rifle and lubricate

10) Assemble & enjoy!!!

I shot off about 200 rounds today at Chabot. Absolutely zero problems!!!

Here's my impressions:

1) the recoil is much less than a "regular" AK - probably due to the increased weight of this gun.

2) the Tapco G2 trigger group works great, has a relatively light pull and breaks cleanly. No trigger slap!

3) this rifle is more accurate than my Romy G. See the pic below - that target was at 100 yards, with iron sights, and my poor eyesight.

4) some magazines were a tight fit - but I'd rather have a tight fit than a loose fit.

5) that thing THROWS brass hard and straight to the right - hitting the ceiling at Chabot, and bouncing down hard on whoever was two benches over to the right. I eventually put up a little fort to stop the brass from hitting my neighbors. :D

6) it was fun to shoot!!!

Here's another pic:

RPK: It's what's for dinner.

If the butt comes out the way it did on my Romy G parts kit.. You have to remove the two screws and pull REALLY hard to get it out. The finish on my Romy kit was stuck to the metal of the rifle. Being a parts kit, I put the receiver stub in a vise and gave 'er hell. Two people pulling (carefully) against each other should be able to do the job.

Man... I want an RPK next, and really wanted to build one, but the price of parts kits, I think it'd be cheaper just to buy one of these.

M. Sage - LOL (RPK for dinner) - I didn't even think of that when I took the pics - glad I didn't take it on the toilet like I did for my shotgun - can't imagine where *those* jokes would go!!!

It's a *rifle range* !!!

:D

Willits - yes - I will be happy to share my recipe for the rifle finish. Glad you liked the gun!!!

Shinigami - thanks for the compliments on my shooting! I think a lot of credit is also due the rifle - the bipod works great, and I weighted the bipod feet down with sandbags to keep it from bouncing around - that seemed to be the trick.

The bipod is attached with a single pin, that is peened in - doesn't look too hard to take out - but I would try the gun with it first - is really makes benchrest shooting easier - and looks pretty darn cool, too!!

Dean at DD's Ranch said last week that he's sold 23 of these so far - not sure how many are from the group buy - but I'm estimating something like 10.

Maybe it's time for a roll call.

Yes, it's Duplicolor HIgh Heat Ceramic - you should be able to get it from Autozone or Kragens.

Here's a pic:

http://www.duplicolor.com/gallery/gallery_images/can_engine.jpg

In the past, I've used BBQ paint, and a special paint for plastics - but this stuff seems to be the best, as far as wearability. It's also nice in that if your gun gets scuffed or scratched, it's easy to touch up.

Ok picked up mine today. only 50% done with cleaning and stuff (Yep, it's a filthy gal :D).
Just a short review for now, will post pix tomorrow
Pros: Very very nice parts, most matching, Tapco Trigger,
woods are not bad at all, when they say Heavy Barrel, they mean it! really comfortable even without any grip. She loves steel magazine, and fits tight. A true RPK, looks ready for some serious range shooting. Total cost with shipping/transfer/DROS $590. :hurray:

Cons: front sight base is slightly canted to the right, rear sight is at a weird angle, that muzzle brake adaptor thingy is horrible. She won't take my 10 rnd polymer mag.

Conclusion, guess my luck crapped out on the sights and muzzle part, or it's just a century thing. I will try boresight it tomorrow, and see if the sights would be an issue at all. This is my first century rifle, and the overall quality is much better than I expected, specially things that are inside the receiver are just superb. IMHO, for less than $600, i got a hell of a deal.

Many thanks to Oaklander for the group buy and Dean for getting us this true RPK clone. Now I just need to shoot it.

You are very welcome for the group buy!!! And thanks also to DD's Ranch for ordering these for us. He's sold so many that I think he's going to start stocking them. It's nice being able to have something a little different than the rest (at a bargain price).

The muzzle device is not removable (it's spot welded on). The gun actually balances pretty well - I thought it would be very front heavy with the heavy barrel - but it's not too bad!!

Actually, the muzzlenut can be removed if you grind off the spot weld (in most cases)

This is from the Centuryarms.biz:
Product ID: RI1407 Condition: New
AES-10B HI-CAP Semi-Auto Rifle, Cal. 7.62x39mm

We’ve taken it and made it even better! Our incredibly
popular AES-10 and added a brand new heavy barrel and relocated the bipod to make it look almost exactly like the famous RPK.

So, this new heavy barrel does not have "chrome bore lining"?

Yes, I'd be interested in this info too - I've got an AK-74 style muzzle brake that would look really good on there. I may take a look at it tonight, and figure out if I want to try my dremel-fu on it.

I wonder if they put that nut on there for federal parts count requirements. Maybe there aren't enough US parts to put a foreign brake on it and they don't want anyone to accidentally commit a felony.

Good tip, H~!~!

:D

I might try this - some of my pre-bans are even hard to get in. I understand these rifles are imported for single stack mags, then "converted" by Century to take the double-stacks (AFAIK, all new *foreign* built AK's are imported this way).

Took it to the range today - lots of people trying to look at it (while pretending they weren't looking). I suspect that a lot of shooters in PRK have never actually seen an AK.

A bunch of us are going to the range on Sunday - too bad you are in SOCAL, or you could join us!!!

Got any pics yet????

Finally took it to the range today. Answering questions like "where did you get it?" "How is it legal in CA?" "How much did you pay?" blah blah blah.

Anyway, here is a cheap A4 sized paper target, at 50 yards, warm barrel, 30 rounds fired, you can see 28 of them landed on the paper, don't really know wut happend to the other two  Keep in mind, my front sight is canted

I bought an AES 10-B about a month ago. For the most part, it is exactly what I expected. I knew it was going to take a little tweaking to get it to work properly. For starters, if you want to use a Russian 75 round drum you will have to drimal the latch tab on the drum to make it thinner so it will latch.

The sights were canted, so I had to drimal the weld between the front sight and the nut on the end, and with a little work, I was able to line it up with the rear sight.

Its also a lot lighter with that bipod on the front removed.

Well here is anothe one, cleaned the crap out of it, hosed it down with CLP, doesnt look to bad. Plan on giving it a new coat of paint, maybe a quickie of high temp engine paint, or appliance enamel, the Century finish, well it is what it is. US parts look to be G2 FCG and piston, I threw on the US grip. Also plan on removing the spot weld on the muzzle nut, why is it welded? Also may try to dremmel the spot weld on the bipod clamp so it will rotate again. Not to shabby for $500.

Man, that AES-10B with the drum is pretty hot!

I have a question for the rest of the Calgunners that got the AES-10B, what was the condition of the furniture and the metal parts on the receiver when you got the rifle in?

I am asking because when I saw my AES-10B the wood on the upper handguard was a mismatched color and the club foot stock looked pretty beat up. I have received older rifles before (SKS) so I have an idea what to expect out of guns built from parts.

Worst comes to worst, I was planning on having the AES-10 sent to get either duracoated or reparkerized. Though this rifle will be a shooter and not a safe queen, I still want the sucker to look somewhat decent.

FWIW, the leather sling arrived in pristine unfinished condition:), I am sure I could use a leather stain to darken it up to match the darker stain I was planning to finish the furniture of the rifle in.

Hi Simon!

The metal and wood appear to be a little rough on them. It just took me an afternoon to clean mine up!

Basically, you just need to get some hi-temp paint and paint the metal, and do a little sanding and staining on the wood. I've posted instructions somewhere (maybe even in this thread). PM me, and I'll try and find them for ya'

Once you get it cleaned up, you'll find that it's a great shooter. I've had *no* jams or any other problems with mine. And that's using both Chinese and Comblock pre-ban mags, and softpoint and FMJ ammo.

I've also noticed that they are pretty darn accurate for an AK!

Even though they are a little heavy, I took mine and used it at the last tacrifle match at Chabot - it was totally fun, and I think I may have put some AR guys to shame on the last course-of-fire. It involved hitting tennis balls at about 25 yards, and I was the only one who was able to do it with one shot for each ball.

:D

I'm gonna leave mine rough looking...for me, it's equal parts:
1) rough finish matches nicely with my 15-year old drum mags
2) it's just a commie-bloc beater gun anyway, right?
3) I'm just being lazy

Went to pick up my AES-10B last night from my FFL (Ade's) and soon as I got home the next few hours were spent disassembling and cleaning the rifle.

First thing I did was field strip the rifle and got rid of the crappy shepherd's hook and replaced it with a tapco retaining plate. And next I took the gas tube off and removed the upper and lower handguards.

The biggest battle was to get the club foot stock off. Man!! The stock felt as if it was glued into the receiver. At one point I even thought of using some vegetable oil to put between the stock and receiver (internal part where the end of the stock sits in the receiver) and hope that would cause the stock to move.

Came up with a slighty clever way to get the stock off. I got a wooden dowel and put that in the magwell. Then had a friend hold the rifle vertically (muzzle pointed up) by the dowel and barrel. Then I grabbed my bench vise and used two old towels to keep the stock from getting marred by the vise jaws. And then a few whacks with a mallet and bingo, stock removed from the receiver. :D

Stripped the old finish off the handguard and stock, seems like almost everyone on this thread got a upper handguard for the AES-10B that is quite a bit lighter in color than the lower handguard and stock. I think once I stain it, it'll be much improved.

The other good news, FSB, and the Front gas block were not canted, so that was a good start.

Gonna try and get home at lunch to post pics of the work I have done so far.

Did anyone find replacement stocks for the RPKs?

I keep looking around, but the only ones I can find are part of the RPK parts kits and those are mucho $$$. Gonna go to wal mart after work and pick up a can of red oak minwax stain (thanks for the tip oaklander) and try to get the furniture done tonight. Then tomorrow morning will be all metal work. Cleaning the cosmoline off the rails and cleaning out the bolt and firing pin of any leftover cosmoline that the carb cleaner couldn't get to.

And I agree with Shinigami, if you decide to shoulder the rifle the length of pull is pretty short compared to a standard AK stock. Hopfully I'll be able to shoot the rifle by next Wednesday at Angeles.

And I agree with Shinigami, if you decide to shoulder the rifle the length of pull is pretty short compared to a standard AK stock. Hopfully I'll be able to shoot the rifle by next Wednesday at Angeles.

Post a WTB on the other AK boards, that what I did, and I got a unissued replacement set, Russian, $75. There were cheaper ones but its beautiful.

First thing I did was field strip the rifle and got rid of the crappy shepherd's hook and replaced it with a tapco retaining plate. And next I took the gas tube off and removed the upper and lower handguards.

Strange, I heard those won't fit with a scope rail riveted on...

I just finished painting & refinishing my AES-10B and assembled it with Dragunov
style stock, used a piece of 1x4 and wood putty leftover to fill up the thumbhole. I'm going to try it tomorrow at Chabot between noon & 2 pm.
After spending 250$ on MM grip for ar&ak, it's time to try something else.

Sage,

I use the tapco plate on the saiga and the aes-10b. Both rifles have the scope rail on them. There doesn't seem to be any fit issues. Do you think you could elaborate on what problems people were running into? Thanks.

Does anyone know if AK furniture will fit on the AES10B?
I know it's a different rifle and all and the front handguard does look slightly different, But I was just wondering? Or is my only choice to look at RPK part kits?

With some massaging, standard AK wood should fit. The lower handguard may need some shims as the RPK barrel is bigger, stock should work fine.

EDIT

Lower handguard will need a different retainer the RPK wood is much wider that the standard retainer, upper wood/gas tube- no problem

Thanks
That answers my question I was hoping to find maybe some black synthetic furniture. I'm not a huge fan of wood furniture...
Although all the AES10B's here look really nice, and are the reason I'm going to be ordering one this weekend

I don't want to paint the nice wood black, so I guess I'll just have to go and restain the wood... I'll just keep an eye out for extra pieces of furniture to paint and see how it looks....

Well thanks for the reply and great looking AES-10B's everyone:cool2:

One more question for all you AES-10B owners...
I know that the AK47 handguards won't really fit unless you do some shaving and tweaking, but what about the AK stocks?

I saw that Oaklander put on a Dragunov stock on his....
But did you have to do anything else to get it to fit?

I want to try and match a stock to the Monsterman Grip
and I've seen some low priced black synthetic kits for AK's cheap on Gun Broker....

If you're interested in the AES-10B - it looks like Dean is sold out (just checked his website).

:(

You might want to contact his and see if he's gonna get more at the group buy price ($500).

I think I'm going to do a PSL group buy in a few months if I can find a vendor who will remove the butt-stocks.
