Anyone down? I'm aiming to take that Friday off, head out to the knoxville area and do some camping, wheeling and shooting. Would likely head home Sunday late morning. Bringing my dog.

FWIW I plan on getting in some long range (200+ yd) shots while out there. I'm bringing a few target stands for different ranges to setup while there.

Any chance you might do this activity again in September? I'd be keen to go on a run at that time.

I'm trying to start wheeling/camping more I've let it fall by the wayside for too long so yeah I would be up for going back out again, the same place if it turns out to be good or some other BLM land, whatever.

If you have a particular weekend that works post it up.

How trail worthy is your 4x4? I know of some excellent, remote areas that aren't easily reached by your standard 4x4. Cow Mtn up near Ukiah still has some decent areas. Panoche is slated to reopen on 15 October, but access is easy in a passenger car in that area.

I get by I guess :D Shredder, hammers, TDS, 'con, et al I have also been in and around the four wheeling industry for a long time.

On my Jeep I have SOA, detroit, d44, d60, 35"s, winch, twine, duct tape, chewing gum... and I watch a lot of MacGyver ;) Always interested in four wheeling new places. arrrrrrr :chris:

Nice Jeep you have there :) My Toyota is similarly outfitted and I've done the 'Con, Dusy, Johnson Valley, etc etc. If we can manage an outing in September, it'll be somewhere good :)

What do you use for target stands? Any photos?

One of my favorite little easy trails has an open shooting area that I plan to check out (NF land), I also gotta look into the legalities of the BLM game as my father and some friends of mine live in the deserts...

PS - Here's my Jeep being a poser...

I'm not really gonna do anything 'core anyways, I've mellowed a lot over the years, a good trail run is a lot of fun these days. I'm still up for stuff like the Dusy or whatever, but my days of runs through the Hammers are done. ;)

Nice Jeep :) You know Duncan over at Four X Doctor? As far as BLM, check their site, but I'm pretty sure all the standard hunting rules apply, ie. you can shoot pretty much whatever is legal. Careful though, some BLM restricts the type of gun you can use in certain areas, like shotgun only, etc.

No pix, I'll try to nab some tomorrow. PVC pipe, simple stuff.

On my bronco I have about 10% tread on the front tires and about 50% tread on the rears. Its got a spooled rear and limited slip front with 35x12.5x15s on it so as long as we don't get to crazy I'll be ok, then I can sill buy the dillion press that I want and wait untill sept. to waist the $1200 for new tires. The spool eats up the tread pretty fast.

That's funny, I just got a pig tag at Wal Mart the other day.

Anway, here's one of the targets I'm going to bring I just finished making it. Cost about $10 to make, 1 cut up cardboard box provides four backings. Velco cable wraps secures the backing to the stand and I'll just tape my targets to it. Tall mode for standing and shooting pistol or I can take out the lower legs and make it short for longer range stuff. :)

Ahh, bit to far north for me. It would only be about a 2.75 hour drive in my car, but in the jeep it would be more like a 3.5 hour drive (4.56 gears with 34's, no over drive) Would love to go pig hunting though, maybe another time.

At some point Friday then I figure it would be a good idea to scope out game trails and watering holes for a Sat am pig hunt.

If I am done by mid September I will be spending a week up there. 'Con/Fordyce/etc. My Jeepster loves the hammers.:D

That's awfly far away from the Hammers!!

My trail XJ is in similar shape soon... Plucking the engine out next weekend.

Gonna hit up Swamp Lake with my club (NAXJA) in mid-August, that's my target for the engine job (got a good 4.0 in the garage, just gotta freshen up the bottom end).

I'm actually thinking of a Rubicon trip in early October, reason for that timeframe is twofold... One: I usually go to Moab with my club during that time, this time I won't be able to so I have to nurse my wounds somehow. Two: Less idiots up there when it's nipply out ;)

Less skeeters as well - been a rough year with the skeets so far up there according to friends.

I put in a 87 Buick Grand National turbo V6/Ford C4 reverse manual tranny/D300 4:1.

Before that is was the original 225 backed by a SM420/D20 combo. Worked great until my last trip last year when I got a BAD rod knock - lost the synchro into 4th gear - and the xfer case popped out of gear - all on one trip doing the Doran/Odessa loop out at Calico.:(

I'd be down for a sat am pig hunt. I notice the pigs follow the same trails so we just look for fresh poop on friday and watch that area on saturday morn.:53::piggy:

btw: for those that have been there before, where is a good place to meet up? Do you get cell reception? Anyone else have a CB radio? Is the "campground" a good spot?

There are 4 ways to get in. Pope canyon rd to Berryessa knoxville rd then to the camp site. highway 128 to Berryessa knoxville rd. Morgan Valley rd to Berryessa knoxville rd. all those roads are pretty smooth and most trucks will make it. There might some water crossing on the way that get deep in the winter but in the summer they are shallow to non-existant.
There is also county road 78 off highway 16 it is a rough road and I've broken my truck many times on that road. Unless I get some new tires I will try to avoid that road even though it is the shortist way in(commeing from Woodland that is).

The camping is primitive last time I was there they had a couple of port a johns. No water so bring lots of it. In august it is hot and dry and in the middle of fire season fires are by permit only.

Its been about 4 years since I've been there and that was how it was last time I went.

Depending on witch way you want to come in depends on the meetin place.
I would prefer highway 128 just before the lake.

How rough is that area offroading-wise?? I'd like to do some wheeling/camping/shooting, but probably won't make this date. Maybe I can drag the wife out at some point.

FYI I have access to a house at Clearlake, takes about half an hour to get to Knoxville via MVR from there. Don't think I can do much 4-wheelin tho, all I can muster is a Cherokee.

tonb
07-31-2007, 7:12 PM
thedrickel: If you haven't done much off roading, I think you would be shocked at what you can pull off in your Cherokee. Besides, most likely worst case is you get stuck on something and someone has to pull you through.

Anyway, the date is approaching, so I figure might as well start a roll call and pick a CB channel. I've got a several friends not on this board in the "maybe" camp. (/self shakes head in annoyed manner) I think redneckshootist was in, anyone else for sure?

Wouldn't be able to make your trip but I'm interested in hearing about the area.

It is indeed a small world, too small in fact. :)

I'll nab some pictures while I'm out there I'm sure. Decided to skip out on work tomorrow as well so I'll be there Thurs-Sun. My Jeep has large Ron Paul magnents on the side doors so I can't be missed.

Here's a link to a PDF map of the area courtesy of the CA BLM. They rock: http://www.blm.gov/style/medialib//blm/ca/pdf/pdfs/ukiah_pdfs.Par.62c08188.File.pdf/knoxvillerec.pdf

some things have come up and I have to move out of my house. I have a new place to live already and need to get out asap. Saturday is the move day so I wont be there. The whole situation I am in at my current house is pretty crazy and I just want to start over.
