So, I ordered an M16 bolt carrier assembly from DPMS (seems like everyone else that I looked at was out of stock), and recieved this email from customer service:

Arisaka,

We are unable to ship M16 bolts to non FFLs. Would you like a standard AR15 Bolt?

Thanks,

So, not trying to put them on blast, but does anyone know where I can get one? Doesn't seem to make much sense.

That's crazy... my Adams Arms upper has the M16 BCG and the upper has M16 style machining, all shipped to my door. I have been doing my research on this stuff and it seems that although M16 parts in and of themselves are legal to posses, there aren't any specific regulations about what parts require FFL. So some bigger companies are taking the CYA approach to parts they consider a "grey area".

If you can find them in stock, it seems that everyone and their brother will sell you one. Except DPMS lol.

I think some retailers won't ship full auto BCGs, only semi ones.

Its perfectly legal to have a full auto style bolt carrier group in CA. Tell them you will take your business elsewhere. Bravo company and even Del-ton make mil-spec carpenter 158 bcg's and you should have no problem having them sent to CA

^^This isn't a California thing. The email says that they won't ship F/A bolt carriers to non FFLs (I'm assuming this is not a state-specific policy)

It's Not a Cali thing its a ATF thing. As I have read it's not good to have ANY M16 FCG parts including the BCG. AR15 vs M16 Parts (http://www.ar15.com/content/legal/AR15-M16Parts/)
Why take a chance? The ATF can pretty much screw you good even if you are technically correct.

BCM has their auto bolt carriers in stock. As an aside when you say M16 bcg is that the same thing as auto?

imo DPMS sucks and their quality is down the drain. There's plenty of other sellers, I've gotten a BCM FA BCG once before, no problem.

I tried to order from YHM, a 5.5" 9mm barrel for an AR pistol build. They won't sell it unless you have a class 3 license. Even Ammo Bros was unable to order it because allthough they have an FFL, they don't have a class 3.

Always glad to help! I ordered one from atomictactical.com, they post here. Still very strange policy on DPMS part.....

F___ DPMS and their sh_tty Freedom Group anyway. It's not like they're known for quality.

DPMS sucks. They just saved you from having to re-buy a decent carrier later on. The only parts I've had trouble with in 20 AR builds are Vulcan/Hesse lowers and DPMS.

I'm using a DPMS barrel and upper reciever parts, stuff works okay so far. This build is a mutt lol. It's DPMS, Colt, RRA, NFA, and apparently a no-name BCG. We shall see....

The barrel and Bolt in the AR are the 2 most important components don't skimp.
