X2, waiting until the other GB gets their parts would make it a lot easier to commit to a frame.

Hey fiferronald,

Do you think 40-50 frames is enough for the group buy since so many people are buying jigs? (I was hoping they would count 1 jig as 1 frame...)

jfifer
10-13-2012, 6:09 PM
Unfortunately, only frames count for the group buy. We are half ways there. On another note, thru group buy will not have a final date until the original buy has concluded. Read update above.

Everybody please read the original post with greater detail please. On the radius website "99.95" is a deposit towards the 200 and individual would pay if purchasing without participating in the group buy. I am also okay with pickup of the frames or jigs at my place in Ontario. As stated in the original post, i will keep this buy open until after the first has been completed because many would like to wait and see how that one turns out. Thank you!

If the delivery dates are really set for nov 15th still i'll possibly take two. I have two and a jig from the first buy but I wouldn't mind a few more to help this buy go through. I'm only in if the date is solid. I don't want to tie up more money and wait. I could possibly get some buddies to join in on this as well if you guys need a bit of a push to make the count.

jfifer

Savs, its possible the date isn't set in stone, same for the first buy. The date given by ares is an estimate, but a confident estimate.

Thanks. I'll give a bit to see how things go. If they don't get released on time i'm going to to build a few new projects instead of keeping this on my top build list. If everything is still on schedule though, i'll should be in for a minimum of 2 for this buy to help out with maybe 2 more if needed and i'm sure I could get a few friends to carry the number above 12

If you wrap group buy 1 and it hasn't destroyed your faith in humanity or your wallet then I am down for round 2.

3 frames for me only if we break the 100 level to get the discount.

jfifer
10-28-2012, 7:59 AM
IF our faith in humanity hasn't been destroyed by the first group buy I will be more than happy to run a parts and/or frame group buy. That matter will be discussed with the conclusion of said first buy. Also, as a note, my lovely wife.has taken the liberty of inviting my laptop computer scuba diving and as of a couple days ago will only have my android phone to run this buy. In the iphone version my pm's never send and editing my original post is difficult. I just wanted to let everyone know who has messaged me but hasn't received a response. I do not have a wifi modem either. As for an update, it seems i have about ten more commitments IF we reach 100, so if I include those we are at about 80!

I'll bite for 2 paperweights provided we reach the 100+ mark, we see the BATFE letter and the first group buy is positive and successful.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know what material the handle is made out of and will we be able to attach standard grips? Doesn't look like it has the provisions for grip screw bushings in the limited pictures available.

Just an update for everyone, We are 15 days out from delivery and are working non stop to make delivery on that date. Everything is on track and see no reason at this point for any sort of delays. We do ask that if the massive amount of emails we have been receiving can be kept to a minimum we can focus on processing every order we have received so that there will be no delays.

Here are a few cell phone pics of the finished and final prototype

What's up with all the BATFE letter stuff? It's a non-firearm, like every other "80%".

Every other 80% has to be approved by the BATFE to make sure it is only 80% finished and no more. Since this is a railed STI style 1911 and it is completely different from every other 1911 80%, it needs a BATFE approval letter.

I'm on the fence here, help me out. I get the 80% thing. Ok, so this may be a dumb question or I'm missing something, but what is it going to cost approximately to buy the remaining needed parts? Whats the advantage as opposed to a complete gun with a warranty? To me it seems you will need at least $400 in parts to finish it, not counting the jig. Pardon my ignorance.

It'll cost you at least $400 and probably more to do a minimum build and I would imagine most people will be spending more. You never save money doing an 80% build but it's something YOU built. Some people like the 80% builds because it's a gun that's "off the books" so to speak. Then again some people do 80%'s and then do a voluntary registration. So what's the advantage? I think it varies with each person. Personally I like the challenge of building something and making it work. I'm no machinist but doing an 80% I get to play around at being one.

jfifer
11-02-2012, 9:40 AM
I agree with psssniper, sactoman. Having something i built myself and knowing its mine not to be taken away if it ever came to that. At the least this will cost about 600. Its really something you have to want to do. :)

Desert cowboy, receivee your pm. Ill mark it down :)

As a note, because of my computer situation i have been keeping note of everything the ole' fashion way and am very happy to announce we have broken 100 on the frames, and as soon as ares gets back to me i will begin searching for potential slide/ parts group buys.

Here's a quick question. They say on the website that there are only 2 holes to drill, the rails and barrel seat to cut. However looking at the photos provided above of the "final prototype" (why with only 2 weeks away they are not showing photos of completed product but still prototypes, has production not started yet??)

Anyway the photos provided above there are no holes for the ejector retaining pin, sear/disconnector pin, hammer/strut pin, or safety post. All fine and well, however looking further at the photos on ares website at the jig they are selling, it looks as the only holes they are locating are those for the sear/disconnector and the hammer/strut.

Anyone local there who can stop by and see what the progress is regarding actual production of these 2 products (frame and jig) and exactly what holes are completed? Phone calls and emails seem to be a futile effort.

Like I said above 2 weeks from release date and they are still running photos of prototypes? They should be mid way through their production run for that date and by now have the actual product to advertise.

Thanks

Ya know if every armchair QB with an opinion on this or that re the group buy would just sit back and relax this thing might happen on time. I can't imagine ARES trying to get work done with phone calls and visits from every "concerned" person that's got a whole $125 riding on this acting like it's the end of the world if the date's delayed or not met or there's not a photo of what they want to see. I've got close 600+ in on the first GB with another 500 if this second GB happens and I don't care if they arrive next year. This much I know, I'm in at an incredible price, it looks like an excellent product so I'll be a patient man. Group buys are always a gamble of sorts. There have been some bad ones here in the past it's true. I've never been burned but I have waited a bit more than promised but I've always been happy with the price point. If you can't afford to play the game then don't. Wait for full production and pay full price, simple as that.

Some people don't have that much to swing, I have about 700+ in the first group buy and I'm thinking of going in on this one as well. I'm just not sold on the polymer grip, from the pics it seems like there's not much holding it to the frame. I'd personally like to get my hands on it before I commit to 2 or 3 more.

I understand that, but this is isn't a sti frame.

The frame is designed like a STI frame, There are to rails sticking out that the grip slides onto. Then there are the 4 screws that secure it to the frame. Just like an STI. It is single stack and we have not been told if they plan on doing a double stack model yet. We were told in the other GB that there would be other colors.

wash
11-04-2012, 11:43 AM
It's not an STI so I doubt there will be a double stack version.

What surprises me is that STI never made a single stack grip frame for the 2011.

jfifer
11-04-2012, 11:43 AM
As far as the grip goes, this is pretty much new. Unlike the sti and only a single stack. The option for colors hasn't even been mentioned since the first time. It was probably to "test the waters" so to speak and gauge interest. Or it will be offered later AFTER our initial purchase. To let those know who have messaged me, i have read and taken note of each one. I am still limited to my phone. Hopefully ares gets back to me tomorrow.

Most likely they see huge interest and think the market will bear the $50 increase *before* the product is even released.

If Ares does not honor their $125 initial price, then they will learn an economic lesson when a lot of people back out. I, for one, will not buy from them.

The $125 was for the presale. You have to remember a single frame was $200 during presale and it's now at it's retail price of $250 (we've known this all along, ares gb#1 member here). A presale can end anytime, it doesn't have to run up to the day before the product ships.

The Ares parts kits kind of scare me... $500 or $1400? Very little in the way of info and nothing in between.

I don't want junk, but I don't want to pay exorbitant prices either. A quality trigger with a good barrel and a nice slide are where I'd want my money going. I'm not sure I see the value in a $50 magazine release.

You have a point there but OP had been in touch with them regarding this GB and was given the price of 125 bucks for orders greater than 100 with no indication of deadline. Anyway I will let Jon handle the logistics with AA folks and hope that we get the 125 deal.

that are not already listed on the roster pursuant to Section 32015,
it is not designed and equipped with a microscopic array of
characters that identify the make, model, and serial number of the
pistol, etched or otherwise imprinted in two or more places on the
interior surface or internal working parts of the pistol, and that

number or mark assigned by the Department of Justice, within the
meaning of Sections 23900 and 23920.

I am not saying that it would be physically unsafe, but that it woudl be legally "unsafe"

there are legal ways to build a handgun from that 80% frame, but you can not initally build it up as a 5" semi-auto.

WOW!!!!!!! I haven't even paid attention to that part. I guess I will have to build it up in my free state and leave it there. Hopefully it won't get lost in the boat ride...

I might just be tired but I don't see anything about length

Just build it with a single shot sled in place of the magazine and a 7" barrel and you are GTG.

Then reconfig in whatever form you want.

nobody has said that you had to do that. You need to be fully versed in the laws BEFORE you commit to building a firearm in CA.

VaderSpade mentioned a way to legally build this in CA.
Overall length needs to be addressed.

32100. (b) Article 4 (commencing with Section 31900) and Article 5
(commencing with Section 32000) shall not apply to a single-shot
pistol with a barrel length of not less than six inches and that has
an overall length of at least 10 inches when the handle, frame or
receiver, and barrel are assembled.

From the CA PC :

12133(b) The provisions of this chapter shall not apply to a single-shot pistol with a barrel length of not less than six inches and that has an overall length of at least 10 1/2 inches when the handle, frame or receiver, and barrel are assembled.

Of course!!!!! I don't know why I started to wonder why I had never seen that or didn't think about it. BUilding it up with a 7" barrel and a single shot makes it an Off roster build. Sorry for the brainfart.

Then again, I might end up building it in my free state when I move there anyway. lol

I world really appreciate it if everybody read through this thread before sending me a message. I keep having to answer the same questions over and over that are clearly posted. He reason I am annoyed is because i have been logging on to about twenty messages a day and only one on average has a legitimate question that has not been publicly answered. I will not ignore a message either. Thank you guys.

On another note, i am getting ready to open a group buy on parts kits as soon as we receive the frames. I am hoping for both low end (sarco) and higher end kits to be available (brownells, fusion.)

Is there any need to contact the OP if we intend to purchase more paperweights then first intended? Or should I just add it in to the payment?

Batf did approve. Colored grips are NOT available. I will keep this open for about a week after the first is fulfilled. So probably about two weeks from today. Payment must beade AHEAD OF TIME in full. Im sorry, i am just frustrated. I have been answering the same questions over and over. Once this buy is finalized there are NO MORE 125 frames.
This is interesting, in the original group buy thread, it has been mentioned that BATFe has not approved the Rudius 80% (instead they modified the design to somehow be covered under a previous determination letter).

Since it was a guy from ARES telling it, I believe that story.

I really want to believe that this group buy will work and the price will be $125 but with the determination letter story not quite being accurate, I'm not sure what to believe.

As much as I want to let ARES get on with things, I'm starting to worry and I'm going to send a pm asking about the status of this group buy.

As much as you would like to believe there is a problem, there isn't. I spoke with ares and they told me it's all good. Some people are just so damn bored. Rather than just ask, lets jump to conclusions. The post by ares on the first buy surprised me too. Seems they modified something. Oh well. Big deal. What does that have to do with the status of this buy? Do you feel i am trying to rip you off? I pm'ed about a hundred calgunners my HOME ADDRESS to move this along quickly and easily. If you have a problem with a misunderstanding and feel the need to call me a liar on the board then step out of the group buy.

Another thing, on the first group buy it has been posted by the leader that ares will offer colored grips for around twenty dollars and build parties for about 65-85. Shipment of that buy will happen within two weeks as well. I am really excited. I am going to close this buy o november 30th. I'll call ares tomorrow and give them the date as well with the number of frames that have been paid for. I am hoping to have these shipped out the first week of december, if all goes well. :)

Nice! Way to stay on top of this, you could have easily dropped it awhile back...Please send me your address and I'll have a check in the mail for 1 maybe 2 in the next week or so.

We are honoring the $125 price for this group buy. This will be the last one that we honor that price for though.

SALES TAX: I don't think anyone has mentioned this, but I think it needs to be addressed.

Fifer is in Cali, Ares is in Cali so it stands to reason that sales tax will be collected at time of sale. Per Ca BOE the rate in Oceanside is 7.75%. We are well over 100 Rudius' but using 100 to do a quick calc 100 * 125= 12,500 * 1.0775= 13,468.75! That's almost a grand in taxes! It would not be fair to fifer to leave him holding the bill, especially when he is going out of his way to organize this and help us out.

Maybe, maybe not...I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere. If I'm wrong I will gladly shut up and not add confusion. Just saying I would be pissed if I got stuck paying $9.69 * 100+

Good news, ive emailed brownells, sarco, fusion, and iverjohnson, a chinese 1911 manufacturer, for bulk buy 1911 parts. I am also going to talk to ares if they can get us a bulk buy price for their kits.
